Bintangs Surf Spot

Named from the surprisingly smooth Indonesian suds (beer that is).

Bintangs is a fun and rippable reef break which peels right over a shallow shelf of live coral. Fun and clean, Bintangs is a great wave for more experienced surfers when it is at its best but generally suits intermediate surfers upwards. With a decent south-southwest swell and north wind, you can expect near-perfect conditions with a slabby takeoff into a short but throaty barrel and a shoulder for plenty of turns.

Typically a great way to avoid crowds at the nearby Lance’s Left, Bintangs is a great wave for intermediate and experienced surfers looking to get away from the crowds.

Sibigau Island Surf Spots

You may not have heard much about Sibigau Island but you’ll have some ‘ahuh’ moments when you see whats on offer!

This small and extremely remote island in the southern Mentawais region of South Pagai dishes up a range of waves for intermediate, experienced and advanced surfers that will stick in your memory for a lifetime. Lefts, rights, and infamous slabs will have you booking tickets in no time. Read our complete guide to see what you’ve been missing out on.

Rags Left

Rags Right

Thunders

Sibigau Rights

Thunder Box

Waves

What kind of wave is Thunders?

Heavier and thicker-lipped than some of the other waves in this corner of the Mentawai Islands, you can expect Thunders to be breaking under nearly any swell condition. Peaky and less predictable than neighbouring breaks, be prepared for an extended drop-in on the bigger days, clean barrel sections, and open shoulders ripe for maneuvers along the 300 metre stretch of reef. Higher tides usually offer fast barrel sections over shallow reef shelf closer to the shore. While lower tides typically provide long shoulders further out to sea. In small south swells, the top section of the reef can produce long hollow barrels. At Thunders, you’re likely to get caught inside more than once and regardless of crowds, you can expect 3-4 surfers catching most of the waves as they read the shifty peaks and reef below. Thunders is super fun and an exciting wave for experienced and advanced surfers.

What kind of wave is Thunder Box?

While Greenbush is the Mentawais pin-up left-hand slab, Thunder Box is well-and-truly the go-to right-hand slab. This wedging peak, also commonly known as Rednuht, provides one of the widest barrels you’ll find in the Ments and is a spectacle to be seen even if you’re not up to entering the lineup. Peaking up from deep water and folding on itself you’ll take-off and backdoor a throaty stand up barrel. Short but super intense it is a bucketlist spot for many capable surfers. This spot will come alive in a midsize swell as long as the direction lines up with the reef and can handle a lot of size when the conditions align. You can often go left as well, however, Thunder Box is predominantly a right.

What kind of wave is Sibigau Rights?

Unlike the other waves on Sibigau Island, Sibigau Rights prefer a west swell and is a great option in the prevailing north wind. An excellent choice for intermediate surfers looking to score an empty line-up amongst friends. Even when Thunders is macking, Sibigau Rights will be half the size providing a forgiving and workable right shoulder and occasional steeper section with some potential time in the shade.

What are the most common hazards?

Thunders has plenty to watch out for. Be aware of shifty peaks, random sneaker waves, strong currents, and rouge whitewater on the inside. If it’s small everywhere else expect some crowds to show up.

Thunder Box is renowned for its heavy lip for obvious reasons and a few coral heads on the inside. Try not to get stuck in the impact zone and if in doubt, don’t go out.

Sibigau Rights is fairly safe and sound as far as surf in the Mentawai’s goes. Get the rundown from your surf guide before you hit the lineup.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

If you’re staying at the Southern Mentawai Outpost you can approach Thunders from shore, just keep your eye out for keyholes in the reef and don’t paddle out in the take-off zone. At Thunder Box and Sibigau Rights, you’ll be entering the lineup by boat. At Sigibau Rights the break opens into a sheltered channel which floats you back out the peak with little paddling issues. While at Thunder Box your biggest challenge besides getting under the lip on the drop is finding the right spot to sit in the lineup. Start further out and work you way in so you don’t get caught inside.

What is the beach like?

Think beautiful white sand beaches without a soul in sight other than those also staying at the Southern Mentawai Outpost.

Where should I stay?

Southern Mentawai Outpost

The Southern Mentawai Outpost is an all-inclusive, ecologically conscious, surf resort located on the previously uninhabited island of Sibigau. The island is home to the world-class surf break ‘Thunders’, one of the most consistent waves in Indonesia and they are located right in front of the break. SMO is entirely solar-powered; their buildings are constructed entirely of Bamboo and designed and positioned with prevailing winds in mind. Due to the mindful design of the buildings, air conditioning is unnecessary and they’ll have you sleeping comfortably under your sheets at night. There are no villages on the island, allowing you to enjoy near-exclusive access to expansive white-sand beaches and jungle trails. SMO holds a maximum of ten guests, which prevents crowds and gives you a more personal experience, similar to the experience of a boat trip, with a high staff-to-guest ratio. If you’re looking for privacy, peace of mind and pumping waves; this is the place to get it!

Faq

Veteran tips

1. The smaller Thunders gets, the harder it barrels. At head high height it can spin off barrels of 3 seconds or more. Thunders can handle all sizes, and for the chargers, there are days with legitimate 20-foot face waves. If that isn’t your thing, then Sibigau Rights provides more user-friendly surf and there are many other breaks in the area, including the renowned Roxy’s aka Coldsprings, which offers fun barrels and walls when Thunders is throwing out waves beyond your limits. Rag’s Right and Rag’s Left are also within sight of Thunders, less than 3 miles away. SMO has boats standing by to get you into the waves of your dreams.

2. Take a strong leash and a bigger board for Thunders you’ll need it. More volume will help with getting into waves, longer bottom turns and navigating certain sections. Make sure you’ve got some backup boards and leashes as well. Not many surfers return home with all the boards they arrived with.

3. If you are going to attempt to take on Thunder Box make sure you have been putting in the time at slabs prior to your trip. You don’t want to be remembering the one that got away for the rest of your lifetime.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

SMO owner, operator and guide Eric is an ISA Level 2 certified surf coach, so if you want to perfect your pop up, your barrel stall, or even your tail waft, extra instruction with him including video analysis, is available for a small fee. However, day-to-day pointers are free…just ask. They want you to get the best waves of your life, so let them help you do it and get the most from an epic trip.

Other than surfing Sibigau offers endless empty beaches and jungles for hiking and exploring and SMO can provide information about the local flora and fauna you may encounter on your adventures. The reefs are full of life at night, SMO love to eat what they catch and get excited when guests want to go hunt lobsters, collect sea snails or go spearfishing. They also encourage guests to embrace sustainability ethics as well.

What else
do I need
to Know?

Crowds are generally super mellow unless everywhere else is flat. In that case, boats sometimes flock to Thunders in search of waves so be sure to clock up your wave count during swells.

Location

Where is Sibigau Island?

Sibigau Island is located just over three kilometres off the middle of the western coastline of South Pagai in the Southern Mentawai Islands.

How to get to Sibigau Island?
Step 1
Get yourself to Padang, in Sumatra.
Step 2
Take the ferry from Padang to Sikakap. The ferry route south-southwest to Sikakap port on North Pagai is approximately 177 kilometres. The fast ferry makes this crossing in about four hours (7 am-11 am) once per week, while the slow ferry runs overnight for 13-hours (5 pm-6 am) twice per week.
Step 3
If you’re staying at the Southern Mentawai Outpost, they will pick you up from Sikakap in one of their boats and take you the rest of the way, approximately 24 kilometres to Sibigau Island on the west coast of South Pagai.

Rags Surf Spots

Rags Right and Left are found on an uninhabited island covered in thick jungle in the southern Mentawai region.

This oval-shaped island off the coastline of South Pagai has Rags Right on its southern end and Rags Left on the northern end.  Conveniently catering for hardcore goofy and natural foot barrel hunters.  A few kilometres south on Sibigau Island Island you’ll find the only accommodation in the area in the form of the Southern Mentawai Outpost.  From here as you go further south following the coastline of Soth Pagai you enter the most remote area of the Mentawai Islands.  Read on the find out more about whether or not you’re up to the getting yourself over the ledge at Rags.

Waves

What kind of wave is Rags Right?

Barrel from start to finish Rags Right is arguably the gnarliest waves in the Southern Mentawais and deepest right-hand barrel in Indonesia on its day. Long, clean and hollow on its best day and an unmakeable air-drop to a square and thick-lipped tube on its worst. Either way, if you’re not in the barrel on the drop you’ll get left behind. Be aware of the kick-out zone as exposed sections of the reef in the form of two coral heads are likely to reach up and take a bite towards the exit. Stay away at low tide, keep your eyes open for steep south swell and be prepared with razor focus, mistakes at Rags Right will inevitably result in injury. Kind of like Lance’s Right, longer but not as perfect.

What kind of wave is Rags Left?

Once upon a time, Rags Left was a near-perfect, long barreling left reef break. Unfortunately, it was one wave in the southern Mentawai region that has suffered the effect of earthquakes. New additions include soul-sucking boils and the odd exposed finger of reef. Regardless, you can still expect clean open faces and the occasional heaving barrel as the wave bends around the reef on this corner of the island but only in specific conditions. Turns on during large southwest swells, has been surfed up to 15 feet and holds the biggest of swells. When Rags Left is firing, so is Macaronis, so you’re likely to find the line-up deserted. All in all, it is now a finicky wave that is very swell dependent, but if you catch Rags Left under ideal conditions, you won’t be disappointed.

You’ll hit the lineup by boat but be sure to take you time and watch plenty of sets roll through first.

How do you get in and out of the surf at Rags Left?

Again you’ll paddle out from the boat. But first, get plenty of advice from your surf guide, take your time to watch what the waves are doing and choose where you’ll sit along the reef wisely. Generally, at the top of the reef off the main boil, the take-off can be ledgy or a nice roll in into a makable barrel or a horrid shut-down. The final section of reef is more user-friendly but still needs some size to get around a shallow corner section into some fun open faces.

What is the beach like?

On the backside of the island, there is a beautiful white sand point where the elements meet.

Where should I stay?

Land-Based

Considering the Southern Mentawai Outpost is the only land-based camp in the area, jump over to our Thunders spot guide to find out more about them.

Surf Charter Boat

This is also a great area to get around by charter boat if you want to explore a greater range of waves further afield of the six-plus waves nearby. For a full list of Mentawai surf charter boats check out Indies Traders complete guide here.

Faq

Want to see John John and Kelly Slater get tubed at Rags Right?

See Rags Right at its full potential check out the last wave in John John’s section at 7 minutes and 40 seconds in Taylor Steele’s surf film ‘Innersection’. Rags Right features again in this film at 1 hour, 10 minutes and 13 seconds as Kelly Slater’s final wave in his section also. If you’re looking for some serious tube time, Rags Right is calling your name.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Other than surfing these small islands off of South Pagai offer endless empty beaches and jungles for hiking and exploring. Southern Mentawai Outpost (SMO) can provide information about the local flora and fauna you may encounter on your adventures. The reefs are full of life at night, SMO love to eat what they catch and get excited when guests want to go hunt lobsters, collect lamunan (sea snails), or go spearfishing. They also encourage guests to embrace sustainability ethics as well.

What else
do I need
to Know?

As is true at most surf spots in the Mentawais you’ll want to ride your shortest board for control in the barrel, but consider adding a little extra volume to your board as getting in early can be critical to a successful take-off.

Location

Where is Rags Right and Left?

Petojet Sabu (of the many varying spellings) is located off the western edge of the larger South Pagai Island in the Southern Mentawai Islands.

How to get to Rags?

If you are going by surf charter boat most leave from Padang.

Silabu Left Surf Spot

Silabu Left is a fun and uncrowded lefthander about 10 minutes north of Macaronis Resort.

Not exactly your clockwork barrel which is iconic in the Mentawais, however, you can enjoy far fewer crowds than the neighbouring Macaronis and a stress-free lineup to mix things up. Perfect for less confident surfers and a great first step up into surfing reefs.

Short and mellow but fun and empty most of the time. Silabu Left is a great back up if you can’t handle the crowds or difficulty of Macaronis. Super consistent it works through most tides and handles a wider range of winds than Macaronis. You’ll find that this spot remains clean enough to have fun when the wind begins to go south and Macaronis is onshore. Generally, it will be the same size as Macaronis and can become powerful with some size.

Bat Caves Surf Spot

Approximately 16 kilometres north of Macaronis Resort is a spot known as Bat Caves.

Although the northern half of North Pagai Island isn’t renowned for many surf breaks the natural surroundings are something you’d usually only see in a movie. The wave breaks right down the edge of a tiny deserted island for a few hundred metres with cliffs, caves and incredible beaches in the background on the main island of North Pagai. The idyllic surroundings of Bat Caves will entice you to visit whether there is surf or not!

What kind of wave is Bat Cave?

Bat Caves is a long, mellow, uncrowded right-hander with the odd coverup but mostly long sectioning walls for racing down the line into turns and cutbacks. It’s great on a mal when its small and super fun on a shortboard with some size. A real shoulder burner when it gets bigger too due to long rides.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

It’s a simple paddle in and out from the boat anchorage in the channel.

What is the beach like?

Literally stunning. One to remember and tick off your bucket list.

Where should I stay?

Your best bet is to rest your head in style at Macaronis Resort. For more on Macaronis check out or Macaronis surf spots guide. Surf camps at Lance’s Right and Lance’s Left are also great options. Alternatively, your next best option is by surf boat charter operating out of Padang on the west coast of Sumatra.

Faq

How consistent is Bat Cave?

Bat Cave picks up a lot of swell, particularly, if the swell is quite west and is more exposed than Macaronis. All in all, it is a consistently fun spot when you compromise on a bit of quality.

Land-based or surf boat charter, what is better?

A surf boat charter gives you better access to waves, with fewer people around to enjoy them… meaning you get a little spoilt. However, if you can’t handle days on end cruising the ocean and surfing your brains out, then a surf camp or resort is going to be the better option for you as you can hone in on one break and its neighbouring waves at a time. Find out more on our Mentawai Surf Spots page.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

The boat trip to Bat Caves is just as appealing for non-surfers to experience the spectacular scenery and surroundings, go swimming, snorkelling, exploring or have a picnic and relax on the incredible beach. Across the channel, from Bat Caves, you can check out cliffs that are great for jumping into the ocean, explore the caves and stunning beaches.

What else
do I need
to Know?

You may be able to score a couple of other less known spots between Bat Caves and Macaronis resort as you go past Tanjung Simabai and Sianja on the coastline of North Pagai.

Location

Where is Bat Caves?

Bat Cave is located on a tiny island 200 metres off the coast of North Pagai in the southern region of the Mentawai Islands.

How to get to Bat Caves?

Accessible only by boat it depends on where you plan on staying on land on Sipura Island (Lance’s Right, Lance’s Left) or North Pagai (Macaronis) or by charter boat. Either way, you’ll venture out to any of the Mentawai Islands regions from Padang harbour in Sumatra, including where you’ll board your charter boat from if you go that route.

Scarecrows Surf Spot

Scarecrows is somewhat Telescope’s big brother, it’s a little more powerful, attracts more swell and in general a little less refined.

Nevertheless, it definitely has its good days and is less talked up than the more well-known waves in the area which works to its advantage. Scarecrows is a truly beautiful left-hander offering ample opportunity for consistent barrel sections, performance surfing and even longboarding in the right conditions. Not to mention it may be the closest you get to being shipwrecked on a tropical island but with all the modern comforts and surf on your doorstep. Read on for tips and tricks on scoring Scarecrows and more.

Waves

What kind of wave is Scarecrows?

This long left-hander wraps around the exposed reef of Togat Nusa a small island off the main coastline of Sipura. On the best days, you catch rides up to 200 metres with various sections for turns and tubes. The peak is a shifty take-off which necessitates a sophisticated level of scrutiny at times, however, different sections can appeal to surfers of various abilities. Overall the reef is deeper than other spots by Mentawai standards and can be surfed on all tides. If you’re looking for a challenge then the inside known as the “Curry Bowl” on low tide offers a throaty barrel if you have the skills to commit. Overall Scarecrows has many moods depending on swell direction and size, with the length of the wave providing a little of everything for everyone.

Best time of year:

Lineup vibe:

Other names for spot:

How do you get in and out of the surf?

If you are staying at Togat Nusa Resort, Scarecrows is on your front doorstep. The paddle out is a few hundred metres through the lagoon and channel at the bottom of the reef. If you’re staying elsewhere you’ll need to access Scarecrows by boat.

What is the beach like?

Togat Nusa is ringed by a beautiful white sand beach and stunning shades of turquoise and blue waters.

Where should I stay?

Togat Nusa Retreat

Togat Nusa Retreat is located on the small 12-hectare island called Pitojat which you can walk around within 30 minutes. The accommodation has been skillfully built by its owners and local Mentawai builders using recycled timbers and driftwood to provide a magnificent finish inside and out. Four traditionally inspired Bungalows, each uniquely designed and built in the same style as the main building, using recycled timbers and driftwood accommodate two (unless already organised) people, for a total of eight guests on the island at any one time. All have private bathrooms with running hot water. The funky interior design incorporates hand-built custom furniture and antique lighting and fixtures left over from Dutch fishing vessels. Be prepared for outstanding hospitality, service and food on an almost deserted island with pumping surf!

Faq

Can Togat Nusa Retreat take guests to other regions of the Mentawais?

Togat Nusa Retreat also has a nine-metre aluminium speedboat with a cabin powered by two 200 hp Suzuki engines, equipped with GPS, radio and safety equipment. Which can be used for guests interested in exploring the Playgrounds or Katiet area. The cost is a daily rate of $300 USD for up to 8 guests. As well as carrying all the required safety gear, the boat has a cooler with cool drinks, large roof and padded seats with backrests, ensuring guests are comfortable and protected from the sun during travel and when sitting in the boat shooting photos or taking breaks between sessions.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

From Togat Nusa Resort activities are varied and include beachcombing for tropical shells and other things that wash ashore on this exposed area of the Mentawais, fishing, snorkelling, swimming in the beautiful lagoons, yoga, or take one of their local canoes for a paddle and much more. It is a unique area of the Mentawais and at ita core, really a trip here is all about soaking up the natural ocean and landscapes while you unwind the fullest.

What else
do I need
to Know?

Scarecrows is an extremely consistent location due to the fact that it catches a lot of swell… even more so than Telescopes. This spot does surf better with a longer board particularly because you get wide sets and the main peak shifts a bit. Plus it is handy to beat the crowds when paddling as Scarecrows can get crowded with boats, like everywhere else in the Ments, however it does handle the crowds well. Scarecrows can be quite powerful and very shallow (even though overall it is a deeper reef) with critical takeoffs but not as thick as Thunders gets in the southern region of the Mentawai’s. With everything on offer from open walls perfect for big cutbacks to some sections. Expert tip; when it’s bigger the inside barrels are more perfect than the outside.

Location

Where is Scarecrows?

Scarecrows is located just off the neighbouring island of Pittojat Island known as Togat Nusa to the west of Sipura Island.

How to get to Scarecrows?

Togat Nusa Retreat provides a minimum 10 night/11 day schedule accommodating up to eight people for each group. Guests will need to arrive in Padang the day before your trip date as departure is first thing in the morning the first day of your trip. On return, another night in Padang is recommended. All transfers from arrival at the airport in Padang out to the island and back are included in your package.

As the name suggests, Suicides is not a spot for inexperienced surfers.

Keep your eye out for higher tides (+ make-ability factors), and solid WSW groundswell. How do you get in and out of the surf?

Although you can access Suicides from the mainland of Sipura via a short trek through the jungle to paddle out through the channel from shore, you will be entering the lineup by boat as it is the easiest route from anywhere you’ll be staying.

What is the beach like?

Jati beach is a beautiful long strip of beach along the northern coastline of Sipura Island. The beach stretches from the capital of the Mentawai Islands, Tua Pejat on the northeast tip of the island out towards the eastern coastline. You’ll find nice views of Awera and Silabok Island over the water to the north.

Where should I stay?

Your closest purpose-built surf accommodation options are approximately 1 kilometre over the channel to the north on Awera Island. There are also a couple of great options on Silabok Island next to Awera. Tap the links in this paragraph to go the spot guides and check your options out.

Faq

What are my options if I want to surf something less challenging?

In similar conditions and considering the more exposed spots will be fairly big if Suicides is firing check out more user-friendly spots such as Hookers on the northern side of neighbouring Awera Island. Muka Ikan or Ombak Tikus on the northern side of Silabok island if you’re looking for another step-down the ladder from the Awera Island options.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Mangroves, Inlets, Lagoons, Islands
There are seriously beautiful inlets, lagoons, mangroves and islands you can explore by paddleboard, kayak or boat to soak up some stunning natural beauty in your spare time. AI and the surrounding area is super fortunate to remain relatively untouched in many ways and is a truly unique experience for any seasoned adventurer.

Spearfishing, Fishing, Snorkeling
Experienced spearfishermen have a blast around AI with many great reef edges that provide Tuna, Spanish Mackerel, Giant Trevally and more. For those that simply enjoy snorkelling whether you be a novice or pro you can check out some beautiful corals in calm areas of water or if you’re more experienced check out some fantastic walls of some of the large rock formations off the island.

What else
do I need
to Know?

There’s another left you can find between the breaks at Suicides and Telescopes called Twiggies. This is great for the less experienced surfers in your pack who are still looking for a challenge.

Location

Where is Suicides?

Suicides is found breaking in the middle of the northern coastline of Sipura Island.

How to get to Suicides?

Considering this spot is the closest break to Tua Pejat the capital and gateway to the central region of the Mentawai Islands the journey is shorter than any other area in the Ments.

Step 1
Fly to Padang airport in Sumatra. This is the only point of entry to get to the Mentawai Islands.
Step 2
Catch the fast ferry from Padang to Tua Pejat on Sipura Island in the central Mentawai Islands. The ferry departs at 7 am on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and at 6 am on Mondays. Meaning you need to arrive in Padang at least one day before the ferry departs.
Step 3
Transfer to your accommodation.

Awera Island Surf Spots

Awera Island (commonly referred to as AI) is an unspoiled oasis in the middle of the most wave-rich region on the planet.

AI is home to six surf breaks which conveniently range in difficulty to cater for all levels of surfers.  In total there are at least 14 named breaks which can be reached by boat in under 30 minutes in the northern area of Sipura Island in the Central Mentawai Islands.  By boat, the Playgrounds area of the Mentawai Islands is approximately 30-60 minutes northwest while the southern region of Sipura Island home to Lance’s Right and Left is just a little further.

Waves

What kind of wave is Arewa Right?

You may have heard of this illustrious long right-hand wave by a number of different names; Backyards, Frontskis, Ariks, Suicides Right or even just Suicides which is also the name of the more advanced left hand wave across the channel on the coastline of Sipora Island. Awera Right is tucked away at the end of the long reef with multiple sections (going by various names mentioned above) curving around from Ombak Tidur in somewhat of an inlet of water between the north end of Sipura Island and AI. It needs a lot of swell to start working at full potential, under ideal conditions, you’ll find a heavy barrel section on the take off that mellows out before throwing a second barrel section. With large west swells you can expect long rides of up to 500 metres, making it one of the longest rights in Indonesia. But beware of exposed chicken heads jutting up and looking to take a bite from your board when there’s not much water on the reef in a couple of sections, hence the nickname Suicides.

What kind of wave is Awera Left?

This super fun left-hand wave can be found in front of Toska Mentawai Surf Villas and Awera Resort. To start working it needs a mid sized swell and northeast winds to produce clean walls ripe for several manoeuvres. On the odd occasion with a good size ground swell, the right wind and tide it can be fast and barrelling.

What kind of wave is Beginners?

Beginners is a great spot for those looking to try out surfing. The wave consistently breaks in the same spot with a soft take off and an extremely forgiving face. The paddle in and out of the lineup is a walk in the park giving beginners an easy and surprise-free route out to the line-up. In terms of size and power it’s an easy wave to learn on, while still providing a sufficiently long and fun ride. What’s more, it breaks into a safe area with deep water and a channel just to the side, letting surfers return to the peak without difficulty.

What kind of wave is Ombak Tidur?

Ombak Tidur translated means Sleeping Waves and is also known as Outers because it is the furthest section of reef off AI. This spot has a large playing field of peaking right handers that stand up out of deep water and run along the reef. When it’s bigger it is a very challenging wave due to the reef being vaguely defined requiring a much bigger board and a refined skill set. Sectiony and fast, it is the most consistent right-hander in the region. Exposed to swells it can handle serious size, however, Ombak Tidur is predominantly surfed when it is small. Super fun when everywhere else is flat it only needs a little swell to start working and with the flexibility of being able to surf it on all tides it attracts those who want to clock up some serious hours in the water.

What kind of wave is Iceland?

Some of the world’s best waves are formed by an abrupt shelf of reef jutting into deep water. Teahupoo, Cloudbreak, and Iceland are a few waves notable for this reef formation. Iceland is a thick lipped, heavy barreled, and occasionally grumpy wave which breaks over a shallow section of live coral once it gets overhead and above. Great for surfers looking to gear up for bigger waves, Iceland takes-no-prisoners and holds its shape at almost any size. Super consistent it

What kind of wave is Hookers?

On the western tip of the sharp headland on AI, Hookers bends around the northwestern stretch of reef on the island just as its name suggests. This long left-hander needs a strong swell to start breaking at its best due to its sheltered location. It can turn on different moods depending on the conditions making it an option for surfers of all levels on certain days. Most days it is a long playful left while on occasions it can transform into a hollow down the line barrel if you’re lucky enough to time perfect conditions.

What else
do I need
to Know?

Considering this region has a lot of surfing options that cater for various tides, winds, swell directions and size you will be spending A LOT of time surfing. Be sure to pace yourself so you don’t blow out, protect yourself from the sun so you burn out and make smart decisions so you don’t get busted up on the reef particularly early in your trip. And considering you’ll be losing some sweat take some high quality electrolytes or hydration tablets to assist your body in retaining fluids by replacing the electrolytes lost through the sweating process like sodium and potassium. Otherwise sometimes with water alone you might find yourself waking up with a hangover without enjoying a few Bintangs. Take a good first aid kit too, you’ll be glad you did!
