Seger Beach Surf Spot

After arriving in Kuta Lombok, Seger beach is one of the first surfing stops you can make on your way east.

Being one of the closest waves to Kuta Lombok, it is accessible via a short scooter ride or long coastal stroll from the touristy village. Seger reef breaks best under smaller conditions with a mid to high tide covering the sharp reef below. Seger reef only handles up to 5 foot before it begins to close out. It is open to the ocean swell so it needs very little swell for the surf break to start working. Great for a small swell with a left and a right however the right is much better than the left.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Seger Reef?

Located next to the Novotel the break at Seger beach is predominantly a fun but shifty right-hand reef break. The reef break provides some opportunity for time in the barrel but only under peak conditions. Expect strong currents regardless of swell or weather factors particularly in the dry season. During the wet season, you can expect crowds. NE is offshore for Seger reef and your best bet is to try and catch the morning or evening glass off corresponding with mid to high tides. A low tide can sometimes leave Seger high and dry especially on the inside of the reef where there are a lot of sea urchins so be wary of where you put your feet on the reef. Lower mid tides promote higher probability for barrels and the chances of hitting the reef!

How do you get in and out of the surf?

An easy paddle from the beach with the current usually taking you out into the line-up, keep your eye on the channel and reef underfoot. As always with any reef break take your time to slowly walk out over any reef and time your paddle out to avoid being dragged over the reef. You don’t want to cut your surfing session short by standing on a sea urchin or taking skin off. When paddling back in or if you get stuck in the current that can sometimes be pretty gnarly pulling you west (great for an easy paddle out) you can always come back in much easier around the small headland that Seger reef is situated on and paddle into the back beach. This is a great option for a quick run around if you surf left at Seger beach and the current is too strong to paddle back out.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Reef cuts and infections are a big deal…They require immediate attention to avoid countless health problems.

What is the beach like?

The beach at Seger beach is a small and quiet stretch of white sand surrounded by rocky cliffs and tropical foliage. Beautiful views of neighbouring farmland, rocky cliffs, and of course, fun surf.

Where should I stay?

There isn’t much in the way of infrastructure in the immediate area of Seger YET. However, currently, there is a variety of great places to stay within the wider area of Seger. This gives you access not only to the local waves but quick and easy scooter rides to other breaks in South Lombok. You will want to note that there is a lot of development going on in this area with the Mandalika resort project consisting of high end, luxury development including 5* hotels, a golf course, private villas and residences, marine and watersports activities. Even a Formula 1 track and waterpark are mapped out and in the very early stages of development. For now read on for tips on where to stay and play in Seger Lombok.

Is there food nearby?

Local Beach Warungs – Just about any beach you find in Indonesia will have a local warung even if it is there just to keep surfers fed and fluids up. The local beach warungs at Seger are the closest and potentially the cheapest options you’ll find for pre or post surf meals consisting of food like fresh fruit and packet mie goreng. Just steps from the ocean, you’re welcome to grab a seat still wet from the line-up.

The Spice Market is not the hustling, bustling bazaar that you may be expecting from the name. Rather Spice Market is a classic beachfront resort restaurant where you’ll find an array of dishes inspired by local Asian cuisines with a western twist. Part of the Novotel Lombok Resort and Villas, it primarily feeds patrons of the Novotel however you can call in and use the restaurant with a great selection of wines for surfers with refined tastes. Check for timing, but you might just catch the Spice Market on an evening with a beachside film showing.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Seger Hill is a beautiful spot overlooking Kuta Lombok from the east. The coastline of Lombok is filled with beaches, bays, cliff sides, and neighbouring islands making the views on show great for polishing your Instagram game or pondering existential questions. Seger Hill is worth a stop mid-adventure or in between surfs. Or head east around the headland to the next bay (pictured) which is still Segar Beach only a minute away by scooter to enjoy a swim in the lagoon and escape any crowds. Finish the day with a few bintangs at the Shipwreck Bar as you watch the remaining surfers catch the last few waves as the sun goes down.

What else
do I need
to Know?

Seger reef breaks best with a little extra water flowing over the reef. Check out Seger after a solid rain in the wet season and steer clear during high winds. It’s worth having a little extra foam as well to get an early top on your drop in. Keep an eye out for purple urchin spines before, during, and after your session.

Kuta Lombok Surf Spot

Kuta Lombok is a great launchpad for exploring the rest of the island.

With a variety of world-class waves and an incomparable landscape, Lombok is one of the most beautiful surf destinations you’ll find in Indo. As a result of its accessible locale, Kuta has become a tourist destination in its own right. The surf in Kuta is not as well known as some of the other breaks in the area which makes it a great place to enjoy an empty line-up. All in all, Kuta is a great place to start your adventures in lombok before moving on to some of the more legendary waves on the island.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Kuta Lombok?

Many people may confuse Kuta Lombok with Kuta Bali but rest assured they are on two completely different islands. Kuta Lombok breaks best during the wet season as tradewinds during the dry season tend to leave the line-up choppy and relatively un-surfable. The reef outside of Kuta Lombok opens up to a fun, long, and clean left reef break. On the inside, you’ll occasionally see a few rights that pop up under peak conditions. Great for surfers of all abilities if you are with someone that knows the spot well. Kuta Lombok is a great place to get your feet wet before moving east towards Gerupuk or west towards Desert Point.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

By boat or SUP, otherwise, the paddle out is a long one! Kuta Lombok is not often surfed so when the conditions align ask around and get a few surfers together. Then arrange a boat to take you out, and wait in the channel. It’s worth the effort to enjoy a fun lineup with only your small group out!

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

The break at Kuta Lombok is a ways off of the beach but on the beach, you’ll find open white sand surrounded by some exposed rock and tidepools at low tide and shallow reef ripe for exploring with your snorkel mask and fins. A great place for a family day at the beach in between boat rides to the reef.

Is there food nearby?

Sushi K – It’s never a bad idea to dive into seafood when you’re as close to the ocean as Kuta Lombok. While the competition is slim in regards to sushi dining options in Kuta Lombok, the quality is uncompromising. About a 10-minute walk from the beach, it’s a good option if you need to feed your sushi craving. Pro tip: order rolls that include local fish, otherwise you may occasionally get skimped depending on how recently the last barge arrived.

Sapori – Who doesn’t love a big pizza after a full day of surfing? Sapori is a quick 10-minute walk from Kuta beach and offers authentic Italian dishes, woodfire pizza, and excellent desserts. One drawback: no booze. If you want a drink they may be able to grab it for you next door depending on how much they have it stock. Regardless, Sapori is an easy meal that won’t break the bank and allows you to spread out over two stories for added seclusion.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

The Local Sunday Market in Kuta Lombok is a great place to soak in the culture of Lombok. You’ll find just about any fresh fruit, vegetable, fish, or spice that you could imagine. The people are kind, welcoming, and game for a good haggle. A great place to search for souvenirs, grab a bite to eat, or people watch.

Mana Yoga Studio is a great place to recover from days spent in the barrel, grab a bite to eat, or crash. A calm and relaxed atmosphere hangs over a well-manicured tropical garden, private pool, and shady thatch bungalows. You’ll often find yogis hanging poolside, slacklining, or snoozing in the shade. It’s a bit of a hike at 30 minutes walking from the beach, but great for a rest day before heading back out in the line-up.

Mimpi Manis Kuta Lombok Fishing Trip – Deep Sea fishing in classic Indo fashion. You’ll head out past the reef in a small panga turned trimaran using an added extension of PVC pipe for pontoons. An incredible place to head out to sea and experience the wildlife of the Indian Ocean. Made, the fishing guide is kind, knowledgeable, and good company out on the water. If you love fresh seafood, and you’re in for an adventure, Mimpi Manis Kuta Lombok is a great place to start.

What else
do I need
to Know?

Kuta Lombok is a great place to start or end your trip before heading off to other islands in South Asia. That being said, there’s epic surf too and incredible views to be found on Lombok. Before you leave, be sure to head out around the island if for nothing more than to take in the scenery.

Gili Trawangan Surf Spot

Gili Trawangan is a hidden gem just off of the northern coast of Lombok.

Expect easy access to diving, snorkeling, fishing, and surfing. The waves tend to be a little finicky and it can be tough to time your visit with a swell. Gili Trawangan is the largest and most developed of the Gili islands. When it does break at Trawangan you can expect a fast-breaking right reef break with a square barrel section straight from the take-off at times. When the surf isn’t breaking, you’re still likely to find secluded snorkeling, incredible sunsets, and a true desert island experience. Read on for info on what to do, where to crash, and when to surf!

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Gili T?

As I mentioned above, catching the timing of surf at Gili Trawangan can be a tough nut to crack. Most of the island won’t have much surf but you’ll find the break on the southwestern tip of the island. Your best bet is the wet season, January – June when bigger south-west swells drag over a 300-metre shelf of live coral. You can expect an empty line-up with quick clear tube sections against a breathtaking backdrop. The drop is steep and pitches quickly so pick your line high and keep your speed up. Without much swell, you can expect a long clean open right shoulder great for beginner/intermediate surfers. Might even warrant a longboard? Aside from surfing, when the surf isn’t epic, there’s still plenty to explore and do around the island.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

The paddle out from the beach is short but keep to the channel. If you’re not staying on Gili Trawangan, it’s not a short boat ride from Lombok and worth it for an empty line-up for a day or two. While you’re traveling make sure you have a first aid kit on hand for those reef cuts. Getting medical attention is even more difficult to find outside of Bali.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

The beaches all around the island are white sand opening up to crystal clear water. The island is bordered on all sides by a stretch of reef before dropping off into deep blue water. Great for snorkelling, swimming, or SUPing.

Where should I stay?

Gili T is much more developed than its neighbouring islands Gili Air and Gili Meno and is known for a bit of a party scene. As a result, you can expect more options in the way of accommodation and nightlife. Check-out our recommendations for both below.

Is there food nearby?

Gili Trawangan Night Market is a great snapshot of local food and culture. With everything on showcase from fresh seafood, veggie, or meat dishes, you’ll have a chance to dive into Indonesian cuisine without breaking your budget. In addition to general staples, you’ll have a sneak peek into local pastries, fresh fruit, and live music on occasion. A great place to stock up on calories post-surf and pre-party.

Santi Lounge is the onsight restaurant for Pondok Santi Estate. With everything from fresh fruit smoothies and local cuisine to tacos and empanadas, Santi Lounge showcases a wide array of flavours. Open to guests and other travellers in the area, Santi Lounge is a great spot for romantic meals on the beach or families dinners.

Pearl Beach Lounge – Located just steps from the surf break at Gili Trawangan, Pearl Beach Lounge is a great option for filling hungry bellies after hours in the line-up. Decent food with cuisine inspired by local traditions and wayfaring travellers, you’ll find a mix of European and Asian dishes. As far as venue, you’ll have your choice of sipping cocktails on bean bags beachside or under the shade of the mix of beautiful bamboo and thatch structure. Pearl Beach Lounge is a great place to start out your evening with a nice meal and couple of bintangs before diving into the Gili T party scene.

What else is there to do in the area?

Scuba & Snorkeling – There are about as many dive and snorkel guide services as there are places to dive and snorkel in Gili Trawangan. While you’ll discover that swimming straight off the beach just about anywhere on Gili T is a great option for snorkelling, if you’re looking for a more technical, or “wild” experience, it’s worth looking for a qualified guide service. The best part about so many available dive services is you’ll be able to shop around for an experience that suits your taste and budget. Take some time on the internet to explore or rent a bike and find your own service when on the island.

Bars, Boat Parties & Nightlife – When the surf is flat or you’ve surfed your brains out and need a rest day, there’s nothing wrong with a little indulgence. Gili T is a great place to stumble upon flat seas and find yourself partying. There’s a wide array of bars and beach clubs to check out across the island. Check out our recommendations on where to party during your stay on Gili T.

Paradise Sunset Bar is one of the many beachside bars where you can grab a cocktail on Gili T. The biggest difference is Paradise Sunset Bar, as listed in the name, is aptly located for taking in the amazing sunsets on Gili Trawangan. Be sure to hit up the swing located in the tidepools during mid and low tides. Great place to start your evening after a long day of surfing, snorkeling, diving, or partying.

Jiggy Boat Party is one part bar, one part swimming pool, and one part nightclub. The Boat is a sailboat turned party boat outfitted with two large nets that skim along the water near the back of the ship. Bikini and swim trunk clad backpackers, who populate the boat in high numbers, are often seen jumping overboard to cool off in the warm water. Whenever exploring somewhere new, be sure to be careful of your personal limits and bring a friend in tow, otherwise let loose and have fun!

Sama Sama Reggae Bar – Somewhere along the line, surfing and reggae crossed paths and they’ve been inseparable ever since. It could be Jeff Spicoli’s love for self-medication, and it could be Bob Marley’s desire to grow closer to nature, but somethings the world will never know. As a result, you’ll find reggae just about anywhere you’ll find waves. The same is true of Gili T with Sama Sama Reggae Bar. You’ll find a relaxed atmosphere with live music, like minds, and good times. A bit of a walk from the line-up Sama Sama Reggae Bar is a great option for your post surf Bintang.

What else
do I need
to Know?

If you are staying at any of the 3 Gili Islands in this area and are dead set on getting at least one surfing session in then your best chances of scoring surf is here at Gili T as the surf break is more consistent than the surf spots on the rest of the Gili islands. Also, take care in the water there are strong currents between the islands and with a huge amount of boats coming and going traffic in the water can be a real danger.

Desert Point Surf Spot

Take a deep breath, the rumours are true.

Desert Point on Lombok’s Southwestern Peninsula, under peak conditions, is one of the best-left hand barrels on the planet. Desert Point is legendary for 20-second barrel rides, long open shoulders, and pristine surfing conditions. Additionally one of the most inconsistent and finicky waves in the world, Desert Point only breaks on the largest groundswells on lower tides before disappearing as the tide fills in. Read on to find out how you can score your slice of Desert Point.

Desert Point

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Desert Point?

Desert Point is arguably the best left-breaking wave in the Southern Hemisphere. Or at least the most adapted for surfing. On an ideal day, you might avoid a sunburn by simply staying in the shade. Squint your eyes and imagine a slower, cleaner pipeline and you’re watching Desert Point. Hazards galore, from sharp shallow reef to fast hollow waves make Desert Point unavailable to beginner or intermediate surfers. Take off deep and keep your bottom turn in check, speed is your friend. The last section of the wave is it’s hollowest and fastest and requires a quick exit over shallow reef. On a higher tide the wave can be non existent, as the tide lowers and when the water level on the reef gets just right the sets start rolling in and the wave magical turns on literally like a light switch!

Most Common hazards

Although Desert Point can provide a nice roll into a bus-sized barrel there are a number of life-threatening hazards that keep the pro surfers on their toes. First and foremost the reef is ridiculously sharp and once you lock into the fast and hollow barrel down the line through the grower section you can end up in dry sections of reef and literally a life-threatening end section. There are many advanced surfers that have ended up with life-threatening injuries from this end section of reef so before you paddle out, make sure you can handle the paddle in on the lower tide. Also, be aware of the strong currents that push the entire crowd into the take-off zone.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

Most surfers are camped out on the beach waiting for Desert Point to turn on. However more recently, dudes surfing Deserts have taken to hiring boat drivers from Bali to drop them near the first peak and then spend the next few hours getting shacked before heading back to Bali. Otherwise, walk out to the point, keep your eye out for live reef, and don’t duck dive too deep. And be extremely cautious coming in, hone your timing just right. You don’t want to be caught on the dry reef with a big set about to detonate right in front of you!

What is the beach like?

The beach at Desert Point is a long stretch of white sand with beautiful views of the long peeling left-handers from the peak. Not the best for swimming with shallow, sharp live reef not far from the waters edge and strong currents. Unless you’re surfing, you might want to check out some of the other beaches on Lombok for their picturesque feel. Desert Point is called just that for a reason.

Where should I stay?

As previously stated, a ways back, you might find some of the world’s best surfers camped out under rudimentary yet sturdy beach shacks. After some troubles with local crime, there’s been a shift in the general acceptance of beach camping at Desert Point. Nowadays there are several basic accommodation options (mostly huts) located at Desert Point which you can book on arrival if there are rooms available. Most are simple, with little to no electricity. Turn up and pay in cash. Another option is to find a place to crash in neighbouring Bangko-Bangko, Labuhanpoh or 2.5 hours drive away in Kuta Lombok where there is more user-friendly surf.

Is there food nearby?

There’s not much in the way of food or anything else for that matter in this part of Lombok. Hence the name Desert Point! If you plan on staying for a while the best bet is to bring your favourite non-perishable food and some fishing gear which will also help you fill in a lot of down time that you are guaranteed to have. You can purchase fruit and veg from locals in the area as well. If you’re looking for a cooked meal, you’ll find The Grower Warrung right out in front of the break at Desert Point and you will find one or two more basic beach hut style warungs at Desert Point also. Great places to fill up before or after your session at Desert Point while you watch some of the best surfers in Indo get deep inside consecutive long left-hand barrels. Expect mostly traditional Balinese dishes and plenty of mixed juice fruit smoothies.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

This part of Lombok is typically deserted, no pun intended, during an absence of swell. As a result, it’s a great place to go exploring for a hike or scope out some different beaches. Be warned, there are mosquitos carrying malaria and any adventures you embark on should take fluids into consideration.

What else
do I need
to Know?

There are a diehard group of surfers who have been surfing and travelling in Lombok for the better part of 50 years. Always keep your cool in the line-up, especially when the surf is big and adrenaline is running high. Remember Desert Point can be an extremely dangerous wave, especially further down the line where it can close out on dry reef and I seriously mean DRY REEF. If you don’t have the knowledge and the skills to deal with this then you are seriously putting your life and others in danger. Desert Point has ended some seriously experienced surfers careers and broken more necks, backs and numerous other bones that can be listed on this page. BE WARNED!!! P.S. Take a good medical kit.

Location

Where is Desert Point?

Desert Point surf break is located on the far southwest coast of Lombok where the island protrudes east in the shape of a boot facing towards Bali. Here Desert Point sits at the top of where the toe would be located in the boot-shaped section of coast. Where large ground swells from the south have to wrap into to hit the reef producing world left-hand barrels known as one of the longest and most makeable left hand barrels on the planet.

How to get around?

Make the trip to Desert Point in a 4 wheel vehicle and ideally, one that can handle off-road conditions as the last 30 minutes on the drive into Desert Point is up and over a steep and very uneven dirt road. If you are used to making long trips venturing around Indonesia by scooter then you can do so, however, be prepared for tyre punctures and always take precautions in Lombok as there is the odd case of tourists being attacked by local bandits.

Is there parking fees?

No parking fees.

How to get to Desert Point?
Step 1
From Bali, you can either take a boat to Desert Point, fly to Lombok International Airport, or the cheapest option ferry to Lembar.
Step 2
If you are now on the island of Lombok, travel west over land to Jalan Raya Sekotong.
Step 3
Keep heading west along the coastline, enjoy the beautiful view until the road turns into Jalan Raya Sekotong.
Step 4
Follow Jalan Raya Sekotong until you arrive at Desert Point. The last few kilometres along Jalan Raya Sekotong will be a slow going dirt road over a big hill.

Mawi Surf Spot

Mawi has the most consistent waves in Lombok throughout the dry season, working small and large swells.

Easterly is offshore however southeast trade winds are funnelled through the valley to create an offshore wind if the wind isn’t too strong or to south. For example, 20 knots of SE wind will be cross shore on the wave. Mawi provides mellower waves on high tide for less experienced surfers. Best on mid tide where fun barrels are at the most perfect. Low tide is surfable but can be sketchy with a shallow and sharp reef.It truly is a majestic surf break and beach visited by surfers and European backpacking beachgoers staying anywhere along the southern coastline of Lombok.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Mawi?

One of the more exposed reef breaks in Lombok picking up swell easily the wave changes depending on the size of the swell. Head high and below the surf at Mawi peaks up into an A-frame breaking right and left. At this size, the right provides a fast but perfect barrel that you can tuck into and pull out of before the sharp reef gets shallow on the inside. Once the surf is well above overhead the right becomes non-existent and the left begins breaking further out on the reef completely taking over. At this size, the left can require a quick drop and a bottom turn halfway down the face to keep up with the wave down the line. The end section breaks into deeper water where the reef isn’t as gnarly however the left can be a tricky wave to figure out so you will need to spend a bit of time out there before you begin to enjoy the left-hand wave at Mawi.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

Option 1: As you walk down the beach from the car park to the left is a small channel between the point and the peak. Carefully walk out on the reef and wait in between sets before paddling out through the subtle channel.

Option 2: Or walk down the beach to the right and over the small hill on the outcrop of rocks. Then paddle out from the next beach through deeper water so that the left is breaking to your left instead of your right as in option one.

When coming in on the higher tide you can come in over the reef with no problem, however, on the lower tide the inside will be exposed to sharp reef making for a difficult walk over the reef, therefore, taking option two to exit the surf is the better option for less experienced surfers.

Be sure to have your first aid kit packed in your car or scooter since it is a 45-minute drive back to Kuta Lombok.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

Mawi is made up of a small but beautiful bay with white sand beach and rocky outcrops. Shacks along the edge of the beach and between the carpark and entry point provide shelter from the sun and nice viewing platforms of the surf. There is plenty of beach to relax on enjoy. Access off the main road isn’t the easiest so there is always room to get an area of the beach to yourself. Whenever the wave is working there are always a few people hanging out on the beach and soaking up the serenity. The surrounding land is hilly with small plantations on the flat ground through the drive in. These plantations are usually used for growing tobacco. It’s a truly picturesque beach worth the trip.

Where should I stay?

The closest accommodation is along the main road Jalan Mawun. However, surfers that visit Mawi for its surf stay anywhere along the coast of South Lombok and most often base themselves in Kuta Lombok approximately 45 minutes away. There are now a few accommodation options popping up within a short drive to Mawi, which is brilliant if you want to spend a lot of time at this spot. One place with a super epic view is, ‘Artati Bungalows and Restaurant’ (listed below) which is approximately a 10-15 minute drive from Mawi. Otherwise, you can choose from a few accommodation options around Selong Belanak, which is just a little further west.

Is there food nearby?

There is usually a couple of locals selling snacks, cold drinks, bintangs and coffees in the shacks from their makeshift bamboo shop between the scooter/car park and beach.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Make the most of island life and suck back a few bintangs on the beach or under the shade in the bamboo shacks which stretch along the beachfront. Mawi beach can be quite a social beach with light crowds of fellow surfers, travellers and locals chilling out in between surfs. If you get restless venture on to some of the nearby beaches such as Mawun (pictured) to check out the natural beauty the landscape and small bays in the area provide.

What else
do I need
to Know?

If you are up for a day of getting the most hours in the water then this is a great spot to clock up your wave count. At certain tides the lineup will empty out and in between times you can chill in the shade on the beach sipping coconuts while grazing some simple local food.

Sereweh Surf Spot

Sereweh is one of the lesser-known areas of Lombok.

Located on the exposed SE coastline, Sereweh is ideal for kite and windsurfing, but also offers fun surf in the parts of the year when there is very little swell.  A large channel in the reef provides a curved corner of the reef that produces sections of right-hand waves.  Can be a mission to get to, however, going by boat from Awang is your best option unless you’re staying in Ekas.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Sereweh?

Sereweh provides fun performance waves for the regular footer who froths on going right. The best time to surf Sereweh is when every other surf spot on Lombok is flat and the winds are non-existent. Early morning is best to beat the wind due to the break being extremely exposed. Sereweh can barrel when the conditions are just right and the tides are lower, but mostly you will be attacking the lip, throwing buckets and racing down the line looking for the odd ramp to test out your balance in the air.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

The easiest way to get to the surf break at Sereweh is to organise a boat to take you from Awang harbour. If the conditions aren’t favourable to go by boat then it definitely isn’t worthwhile making the long drive around instead.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Reef cuts and infections are a big deal…They require immediate attention to avoid countless health problems.

What is the beach like?

The beach at Sereweh is a long strip of soft barren white sand that meets the reef on lower tides. If you like solitude then this might just be the beach for you.

Senggigi Surf Spot

Senggigi has a tendency to be more of a stopover than a destination for surfers.

That being said, if you’re passing through on a decent swell and the tide is right you might be in store for your fair share of good surf. Your best bet is a South or Southwest swell over shoulder high and you might find empty line-ups with long lefts and rights with various sections. Otherwise enjoy the abundance of beautiful white sand beaches and secluded bays with a tropical backdrop in the area. Read on to discover how to enjoy the best surfing conditions at Senggigi Lefts and Rights.

Senggigi Left

Senggigi Right

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Senggigi Left?

Depending on who you talk to, you’ll hear about the Senggigi lefts or Senggigi rights. Either wave needs plenty of tide and a little extra push to clear the reef. Paddling out at low tide may leave you high and dry. The left wraps around the point to an open bowl with a testy barrel section. Aptly named “baby deserts” on lower tides the reef sometimes finds a way to poke up through the barrel. Surf schools have started to show up in the line-up but you can expect empty surf most days.

What kind of wave is Senggigi Right?

On a good day, the shoulder stays steep long and open ripe for maneuvers and an occasionally well-timed barrel. Stays a bit smaller than other breaks in the vicinity under the biggest South and Southwest swells. North winds can line-up the sections and make for longer rides under ideal conditions. The lip breaks thick and clean from the shoulder but stay well ahead of the shoulder on the inside as the reef dries out quickly after the steep drop-in. On the biggest swells, the drop opens up to a hollow barrel section.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

Head south from the pier at Senggigi beach towards the point at Pantai Senggigi. There is a small channel through the reef that feeds you into Senggigi Lefts but keep an eye out for exposed sections of reef.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Reef cuts and infections are a big deal…They require immediate attention to avoid countless health problems.

What is the beach like?

The beaches in Senggigi are known for some of the most beautiful sunsets on Lombok. A long stretch of white sand beach which offers up red sunsets that dip behind Mount Agung on Bali.

Is there food nearby?

Considering the highly sought after Senggigi sunsets, there’s an abundance of choice when it comes to dining beach-side or directly on the sand. Read on to discover our recommendations on where to refuel after hours of surfing.

La Chill Bar – Colorful bean bag chairs and cold beers dotted just steps from the high tide mark signal surfers to LA Chill Bar. Mostly western food with burgers, fries, and hot wings, you’ll also find local foods on offer at La Chill Bar. While directly on the sand, La Chill Bar is a short ways from the point at 20 minutes walking. Regardless, you’ll not find a better place to catch the sunset with a round of beers.

The Cowshed – Laird Hamilton will be the first to tell you that what you put into your body is what you get out. Especially in surfing, one meal can make or break your next session. More importantly, who’s surfing wouldn’t be improved by a porterhouse and potatoes? The Cowshed offers a western steakhouse vibe that sticks out a bit like a sore thumb in Lombok’s lush tropical backdrop. Great for filling up on protein before your next adventure and a dive into Lombok’s cowboy scene.

The Ballroom Restaurant – You’ll need to hop on a scooter or grab a taxi to hike over to The Ballroom from Senggigi. Just 10 minutes journey by scooter, it’s worth the drive. The Ballroom is located along a breakwater seaside where you might just feel the occasional bit of sea spray. With a variety of local and western dishes, the Ballroom is a great choice for a romantic night out or a fancy dinner with the family.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Mt Rinjani Volcano Trekking – You’ll never run out of things to do on Lombok but trekking Mt Rinjani Volcano might not be the ideal spontaneous venture. If you’re surfed out and you’re looking for a new place to explore, Mt. Rinjani Volcano is a three-day trek through the rainforest to the second highest volcano crater in Indonesia. The crater, long since dormant, is a picture of heaven with pristine crystal clear water, deep lush greenery mixed with stone formations. There’s a wide variety of tour companies that will guide you up the mountain but if you’re an experience backpacker, you may be able to plan and travel your own expedition. More time spent in the crater the better so plan at-least 2 nights if possible.

Batu Bolong Temple – Not to be confused with the popular surf and travel destination in Bali, Batu Bolong Temple is definitely worth a day’s visit when you’re surfed out or when the swell is flat. The temple is built into the cliffside and larger swells tend to splash up on to the temple walls. Great for photography, exploration, and adventure.

What else
do I need
to Know?

If you’re a temple enthusiast, don’t skip Batu Bolong Temple in Senggigi. Similar to the temple in Tanah Lot, Bali. Batu Bolong means “perforated boulder”. Admission fee is approximately 20,000 IDR and the best time to go down is in the evening to experience the beautiful sunset.

Gili Air Surf Spot

Due to its remote location and lack of particular amenities, Gili Air is still relatively unexplored by the surfing community.

Thus, it provides an authentic South East Asian experience without compromising on epic waves. You can expect fewer folks in the line-up and friendly welcoming locals. All things said Gili Air should make your list of surf destinations before it explodes as the next Bali or Lombok. Gili Air is the closest to Lombok and thus is a great option for day tripping to explore new breaks.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Gili Air?

The wave at Gili air is a reef break peeling off the southern tip of the smallest and most accessible of the Gili islands. Accessible by a long paddle, you’ll be rewarded with little to no crowds and short square barrels. While the break is appetizing, it’s often unlikely to score waves due to onshore tradewinds. For the best day at Gili Air, keep your ears pricked for big SW swell, exceptionally high tide, and light winds coming from the W – NW. On a good day, the shoulder is open for maneuvers but if you’re hoping to spend time in the shade, focus on elongating your first bottom turn before picking your line and pull in fast or you might miss the section. You’re highly likely to bounce off the reef a bit on mid to low tides and it’s recommended to surf with some good sun protection.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

Boat is your best option. To take a look at the lineup on a good day check out some old school footage of Gili Air going off here.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

The beach at Are Guling is a half-moon shaped stretch of beach skirted by heavy green foliage and nearby island Gili Nusa. A great place for sunbathing or photos if you’re not into surfing. You typically won’t see many tourists cruising the beach and can enjoy the solitude that comes with it.

Where should I stay?

Despite the slow development on the Gili islands, there is still an abundance of accommodations to choose from. Roll your eyes over our list below for recommendations near the surf break on Gili Air.

Cottages at 7SEAS are clean, comfortable, and surprisingly modern for the remoteness of the island. You can enjoy shaded seating areas bound together with thatch and bamboo for afternoon cocktails after a full day of surfing. Just steps from the sea, it’s easy to hop on a boat to local surf, dive, fishing, or snorkel spots in the vicinity. Chill Out Bungalows are a collection of private cottages sat directly on the sand on the edge of Air Gili. Bungalows are often outfitted with bunk rooms for travelling families and groups looking for a place to crash. While you’re making a slight step up in price, you’re paying for a bit more space, seclusion, and private beach access. Great for families, couples, and groups.

Luxury Price Range – Slow Gili Air

Slow Gili Air villas are a 5-minute bike ride or 15-20 minute walk to the waves even though the likelihood of scoring surf on Gili Air is typically low regardless. However, these rustic and modern tropical villas are a great place to live the high life in between long spells of perfect waves. Each private villa is held together by a mixture of concrete and locally sourced wood and stone surrounded by heavily manicured gardens and private pools. An amazing place for a romantic getaway in a little solitude. Great for travelling couples and honeymooners.

Is there food nearby?

Warung Sunny – You never can go wrong with your local Warung. Warung Sunny seems to be no exception in that its food is inspired by the origins of each of its travellers. You’ll find burritos for stoked Southern Californians, street food for Awestruck Ozzies, and “authentic Indonesian” for your hipster kiwi friend. Open air, surrounded by a bamboo fence, bamboo tables, and bamboo chairs. Am I sensing a trend? Great for anyone looking to grind on before exploring.

Classico Italiano – Pizza, surprisingly or not, is becoming a bit of a staple on South Asian islands like Gili Air. Classico Italiano sticks to the greatest hits with thin crust, fire roasted, and heavily topping-ed pizzas. Tiramisu is amazing if you’re wondering and with a wide selection of wines, Classico Italiano is a great night out for families, couples, friends, and singles looking for a taste of Italia.

Pachamama Organic Cafe – Just about anywhere you find good surf you’re bound to find a Pachamama. Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru, and now Gili Air all hold their own tribute to the Incan goddess. This hip and shabby-chic Cafe is a beautiful open-air retreat where you can fill up on cuisine inspired by Pachamama’s South American roots. Fresh and Healthy ingredients are great for refuelling before your next surf or adventure.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Scuba & Snorkeling – There are a number of places to explore around Gili Air for diving or snorkelling. To be honest, pop on a mask and start flopping around and you’re bound to find something interesting. If you’re looking for a more guided experience, there are a number of guide services on the island. Ask your accommodation for more information.

Gili Air Night Market – The Night Market on Gili Air is a great spot for freshly cooked authentic Indonesian cooking, for your kiwi friend again, and the occasional live music. This comes with the added delight of being incredibly affordable. You’ll also find a wide array of sweets and fresh infused noodles. Don’t expect the hustle and bustle of night markets in other parts of South Asia as everything in Gili Air is a lot smaller and more laid back. Unfortunately, the dates for when the Night Market is open aren’t conclusive but is typically open during the peak season.

Bars in Gili Air – While the sleeping desert island of Gili Air isn’t quite the party central that you’ll find in parts of its neighboring tourism mecca Bali and is as quiet as a mouse at night in comparison to Gili T. That being said, the Bars on Gili Air could merit a pub crawl, or at least a few pints. There are a few different spots to choose from with the most notable being “Dark Side of the Moon.” Anywhere that derives its inspiration from Pink Floyd is AOK in my book, but regardless, you’ll get a kick out of the teeny tiny drinking space with specialty cocktails and bartenders with personality.

What else
do I need
to Know?

If you haven’t realised it yet Gili Air is where you go to get away from the crowds, kick back and relax in the tropical beach fashion. Surfing isn’t usually prioritised very high on a travellers list when visiting Gili Air.

Gerupuk Surf Spots

Gerupuk Lombok is home to five surf breaks.

This small village is big on fishing within a large inlet made up of several bays.  The locals here make their living from commercial fishing or surf tourism.  Gerupuk’s waves are predominantly suited to beginners and intermediate surfers with conditions for the experienced in the biggest swells.  All surf spots are a short boat ride from Gerupuk village.

WAVE INFO

Inside Right

Inside Right is a right-hand reef break situated in the very east corner of the bay.  A rolling take off into a nice wall that leads into a fast section, often breaking a little wide and difficult to get around but with a forgiving lip.  Outside of this section is a fun inside section that is rippable, great for turns and aerials.

Outside Right

Outside Right is a right-hand reef break situated to the south-west at the opening of the bay.  It has two distinctive waves consisting of a big shifty peak out back that can get quite heavy with some size. Expect a big drop and a fast inside section that gets nice, steep and long.

Outside Left

Outside Left is a left-hand reef break situated to the south-east at the opening of the inlet at Gerupuk.  It is open to Indian Ocean swells and is the furthest break from Gerupuk village.  Outside Left is not often surfed so if you’re looking to get away from the crowds keep an eye on the surf reports for the right conditions.  On smaller swells, it gives a steep take off into a short barrel left and right. But beware, it runs into a shallow closeout on the sharp reef, so fine-tune pulling out through the back.

Don Don

Don Don is a peaky A-frame reef break that left and right. It provides long rides both ways so get ready to be spoilt for choice.  Located in the middle of the bay it is the closest break to the village and only a couple of minutes by boat.  The left and right are both nicely shaped waves bending around the reef to provide shoulders ripe for any sort of maneuver as it bends towards you.  Fun and easy performance waves they’ll give you a good leg workout. Don Don is also commonly known as Kame, which is Japanese for ‘turtle’.  When you’re sitting in the lineup, look over your shoulder at the hill behind you and you’ll notice that it’s shaped very much like a turtle.

Kiddies

Kiddies is a fun right-hand reef break that only breaks on biggest swells.  It takes the biggest swells to start working but when it does you are guaranteed some fun. Rippable from start to finish, you could be fortunate enough to slot into a nicely shaped mini-barrel in the best of conditions. All in all a nice shaped wave that is mostly surfed by grommets, longboards and stand-ups unless the swell of the season comes through.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

Boat access. A surf boat to take you out to any of the surf breaks will cost 150,000Rp for 3 or fewer people. If more than 3 people it will cost 50,000Rp per person for a 2-hour session in the surf.

You won’t have any trouble organising a boat as on arrival into Gerupuk you will find plenty of locals keen and ready to take you out to whichever break is working best.

Your captain will either wait for you on the boat in the channel or anchor up and jump in the surf with you.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

The beach in Gerupuk itself can be home to a bit of rubbish and local fishing life.  However, there are many small bays in Gerupuk that you can get to by a short boat ride or walk if you want to relax on a beach to yourself.  There are other spectacular beaches nearby such as Tanjung Aan which is most commonly visited by beachgoers relaxing in the sun. Parking at Tanjung Aan will cost IDR 10,000 per scooter.

Where should I stay?

There are plenty of options for accommodation in and around Gerupuk with the hosts going out of their way to ensure your trip to Gerupuk is a great one. The nearest Hotel or Resort is Novotel Lombok hotel back towards Kuta Lombok.

shake and bake gerupuk
Is there food nearby?

The Shake and Bake bakery in Gerupuk is AMAZING.  Everything is homemade, all done with the best fresh local ingredients, crafting delicious vegetarian meals.  Their freshly baked multigrain sourdough is made daily and is up there with the best bread you’ll find in Indonesia.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Apart from surfing, Gerupuk Bay Lombok is a small but well-known fishing village where young lobster are caught using light to attract them at night.  Local fisherman scoop the young lobster from the water, transfer them into holding pots attached to floating bamboo pontoons where they are grown for export.  In addition to lobster, a large array of fish are caught and seaweed farmed.  The area is full of sea life and makes for some great fishing.  You will often see big fish jumping out of the water on your short boat ride to one of the five surf breaks.

Surf Camp Lombok is situated at the southern end of the village has a skate bowl that is open to the public.  Head on down for a skate session in between surfs.

What else
do I need
to Know?

Try to avoid staying right in the heart of Gerupuk village. The mosque is central and you will get a 5 am wake up call over the loudspeaker come time for prayer. This occurs four to five times per day. However, that’s if the sounds of the engines starting on the fishing boats leaving before the first call to prayer don’t get you up first! Handy if you want to be sure to rise early for a dawny.
