Pandawa Beach Surf Spot

Pandawa Beach is located at the bottom of a cliff on the exposed southern coastline of Bali.

It is a lesser-known wet season wave or dry season spot in between swells. Known for its picturesque sand beach and lagoon which is perfect for swimming on higher tides. Below the enormous limestone cliff Pandawa Beach is a surprisingly large open area compared to the other beaches along the southern coastline. Situated in a stunning natural setting with white sand and crystal clear blue water it is a spot you’ll want to check out whether you’re surfing or not!

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Pandawa?

Pandawa is an A-frame peak that covers a wide area of reef. The left is longer and more consistent than the right, however, you’ll still be able to snag plenty of rippable waves on the less crowded rights. Although the best rights generally break where the main crowd is looking to go left so you’ll be competing with the crowd for the best waves anyway. Expect a wide open wave face, shifty peak, and currents which keep the crowd guessing and moving around. Pandawa can handle light onshore winds and at times you’ll be fortunate to score it with next to no crowd.

Most Common hazards

Reef Bottom: At lower tides, exposed reef can pose a danger.

Strong Currents: During higher tides, the currents can be strong, especially in the channel between the breaks.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Reef cuts and infections are a big deal…They require immediate attention to avoid countless health problems.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

Entering the lineup is straightforward at Pandawa. There is a large and very obvious sand bottom channel which you can paddle out through from the beach and into the lineup.

When coming back in, ride the white water over the reef and onto the beach. From there you’ll walk along the beach, around the section of cliff that protrudes into the ocean and back to the carpark. On lower tides obviously be careful of the reef when coming back in if you decide to ride your wave in over the reef rather than the long paddle back through the channel. Although you will find that the reef at Pandawa isn’t as sharp as other reef breaks in Bali, it will still cause you plenty of damage if you take a spill!

What is the beach like?

Pandawa Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand with crystal-clear turquoise waters. The beach is surrounded by towering limestone cliffs, providing a stunning backdrop. It offers a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere, making it an excellent place to unwind after a surf session.

Balian Surf Spot

Balian is a steep and clean river mouth rock pile that can hold swells from knee-high to triple overhead.

Expect the unexpected clean-up set to wipe out the line-up from time to time. Balian’s river mouth can catch you off guard but is typically a reliable walled-up clean left shoulder that works on all tides and just might barrel (both ways) on the inside.

Balian

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Balian?

If you consult your standard Balian surf review, you’ll quickly discover Balian is a spot worth your time. Balian breaks left and right over your typical pile of cobbles that accumulates from a nearby river mouth. The left holds longer and potentially more notably, however, the right can be a bit steeper and pitch to form the occasional barrel more often than the left. There is also a beach break on low tide over the river mouth at the south end.

Most Common hazards

Pollution from stormwater runoff at the river mouth can be a hazard at times. Be sure to avoid the first few rainstorms of the wet season in particular.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

There’s a channel to the right and left of the peak. Depending on which side of the peak you plan to surf, you can paddle out past the shore break and head for the shoulder.

What is the beach like?

Balian is a 2km stretch of black sand that meets a river mouth on its southern end. Not typically crowded, Balian beach can be a nice quiet getaway from some of the more popular beaches outside of Kuta. At low tide, the views from the shore may require a pause and a few deep breaths.

Where should I stay?

There’s plenty of places to choose from in Balian. From luxurious treehouse accommodation to simple, local homestays. Depending on your price range, you can choose a locale that will keep your toes in the wax.

Is there food nearby?

Pondok Pitaya Beach Restaurant serves both Indonesian and Western food with nice vegetarian options as well. Food is always cooked fresh and ingredients are purchased locally which also has the added benefit of being organic and pesticide free. Everything is priced very fairly with a healthy juice, entrée and main only costing you about 80,000-100,000Rp ($8-$10). All while literally 10m from the beach!

Sushi Surf Balian can be found just off the beach and is known for accommodating prices, good food, and excellent cocktails. While the wait-time may leave something to be desired, the taste more than makes up for a handful of minutes sipping cocktails. Deki Warung, a short jaunt from Sushi Surf, offers a beachside view of the break, casual decor, and cold beer. If you’re looking for something a bit more authentic, and a bit more fancy, check out Tekor Bali for excellent food and a cozy backyard atmosphere.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

It may not be the place to surf on Big Wednesday. However, the surf can hold clean lines overhead but the shore break can be overwhelming on a big swell. Medewi, about a half-hour’s drive from Balian and is another great option for larger swells.

If you are looking for things to do get in touch with any of the Bali white water river rafting tours and head inland to raft the very river that meets the sea at Balian.

Other things you can do in Balian are…
– taking yoga classes,
– beach walks,
– relaxing,
– and eating in various restaurants.

What else
do I need
to Know?

Located half way between Kuta and Medewi, Balian still has that old-school surfer vibe that so many places on the island seem to have lost. Enjoying waves nearly every single day of the year — even in wet seasons, when other breaks are totally flat — Balian has waves for every level of surfer, and is not hamstrung with water congestion, as so many other spots on the island are. Balian beach, as well as much of Balis coastline, has excellent waves for all levels of surfers.

Consider riding a board with a bit more volume. The shoulders can sometimes be a little soft and it’s nice to have a little extra float to push you through some of the more mellow sections before it walls up on the inside. Balian Surf Camp also offers beachside accommodation, board rentals, and lessons for beginners.

Location

Where is Balian?

About an hour and a half drive from Kuta, Balian is located on the west coast of Bali.

How to get around?

Balian is a nice small village where you can walk around in peace, from the beach to the restaurants, the swimming pool to the hotels. But it’s always a good idea to consider a dirtbike, moped, or scooter when getting around further than walking distance. Traffic can bring out the anti-stoke in all of us and the drive to Balian is no exception. If you can’t get your hands on two wheels, four can suffice for carrying your quiver and getting from point A to point Balian.

How to get there?

Depending on your choice of travel, you can either make your way towards Krambitan via North Kuta or head inland through Denpasar. Either way, you’ll find yourself in Tabanan eventually and continue northwest toward Selemadeg before heading coastward and following signs for Balian. I recommend leaving Kuta to make your way towards the Kerobokan Rd, past the Canggu turn off and continue straight. This will lead you towards the major West to East highway and eventually Krambitan. Follow signs for Gilimanuk to head West. The coast will be in sight the majority of the way, you might find a peak or two worth a session along the drive. Eventually, you’ll notice signs for Balian as you make your way towards large hills off to your right.

Bingin Surf Spot

Once upon a time, the Bingin surf break, situated at the bottom of a cliff was a secret spot with uncrowded waves.

However, due to the quality and consistency of the perfect left-hand barrel that the wave produces, word spread far and wide, and this beautiful wave is now very rarely uncrowded. You can still find a quiet warung in the cliff face village to enjoy a Bintang with your mates while watching the waves and surfers do their thing. Bingin Beach is arguably one of the most beautiful beaches on the Bukit Peninsula. Secluded, clear water, tight and densely vegetated cliffs, and perfect waves make it a hotspot for tourists. But beware; to access the beach, you’ll need to climb down a set of steep stairs that don’t bode well for the unfit or faint of heart. Bingin has a wide variety of accommodation on offer and surfing Bingin will leave you stoked till your next trip.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Bingin?

Bingin offers what many surfers travel to Bali looking for, clean, perfect barrels. A tight take-off opens up to a hollow left on a mid-low tide for about 50 metres. Bear in mind, the wave is not long and surfers who try to stick it out for an open shoulder tend to leave a lot of skin on a small section of reef known as “stop signs.”

Because of the near perfect nature of the wave at Bingin Beach, you’ll most likely run into some crowds in the line-up. This can be a speckled group of locals, well versed in the contours of the shallow reef below, or expert surfing travellers and expats looking to get shacked.

The vibe isn’t much to worry about but it is a challenge for even the most experienced surfers to get waves in this tight take-off zone. So remember to keep your cool, respect the line-up, don’t throw snowballs, and you might get your chance to drop into the infamous greenroom (and kick out unscathed!)

How do you get in and out of the surf?

The reef is a short paddle out from the beach. Be sure to take your time and wait for a good lull in between sets and be sure to keep clear of oncoming surfers. Don’t be that person that spoils someone’s wave by being in the way down the line.

Be very wary of the conditions and have some awareness of your ability to surf this level of reef break. Don’t be fooled, Bingins perfect lefts pack some punch and pitch over sharp and shallow reef.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

As I mentioned above, Bingin is one of the more beautiful beaches that you’ll find in Bali with stunning views over the Indian Ocean. The white sandy beach is located at the bottom of a steep set of about 200 steps that will give the legs one hell of a work out (for shorter people the Balinese sure build big steps) and will get the body sweating. Bingin is one of many hidden beaches that offers great waves, gorgeous views, a few shady spots from the sun, shelter from the trade winds, great people watching and plenty of warungs to keep you well fed. It’s a nice spot for swimming and cooling off in the water when the tide is on the higher side with enough water to keep you off the reef.

Where should I stay?

There is a wide array of accommodation styles at Bingin Beach caters to all types of surfers and travellers, there’s a little bit for everyone. The most comfortable and luxurious accommodations are set on top of the cliff with stunning views. While some of the cheapest accommodations are set along the cliff face (with the exception of a few) only a few steps away from the beach and into the surf. Hardcore surfers have been shacking up in these types of budget rooms for years, most without air conditioning just so they can get into the surf at Bingin at any moment and avoid the tiring climb back up a couple hundred stairs!

If you’re not surfing or enjoying a few beers, you’ll find some peace and quiet in your private bungalow by the pool. Truly a beautiful spot for the budget-conscious traveller, Leggie’s Bungalows are great for surfers, couples, and singles looking for a comfortable place to rest your head.

What else
do I need
to Know?

I might have mentioned it a few times already but don’t forget, there’s a steep set of stairs to access Bingin Beach. The lower the tide, the more reef is exposed at stop signs so don’t forget to kick out before you wind up high and dry with a new Bali reef tattoo.

Location

Where is Bingin Beach?

Bingin Beach is located on the western side of the Bukit Peninsula in Southern Bali. When you first arrive, you will have to walk down some narrow alleyways and if you haven’t been there before, you will question if you are in the right place. But don’t worry, eventually, the alleyways open up to a beautiful ocean view and stairways to lead you down to the hidden beach and Bingin surf spot.

How to get around?

You can get just about anywhere in Bingin by foot but to get to other surf spots a scooter and surfboard racks are essential. There’s plenty of other world class waves in the nearby area of Uluwatu so be sure to try your luck around the area. Traveling by car works as well as the roads are quieter in the area however two wheels are better than four.

Is there parking fees?

Most of Bingin’s access roads are small so it is forbidden to park along the street. There is a large parking area where you will pay a fee of 5,000Rp per scooter at Bingin and from there the alleyway will lead you down to the infamous Bingin stairs.

How to get to Bingin?
Step 1
From the airport head south towards the Bukit peninsula along Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai.
Step 2
Drive approximately 2.8 km from Jalan By Pass Ngurah Rai and then turn right onto Jalan Raya Uluwatu go straight for approximately 20 km, the road will become Jalan Raya Uluwatu Pecatu during this time.
Step 3
After the road makes an exact 90 degrees right angle turn you will take the next right onto Jalan Labuansait.
Step 4
Drive for nearly 3 km and turn right onto Jalan Pantai Bingin in Pecatu and drive straight for approximately 1.3km until you reach the Bingin carpark.

Legian Beach Surf Spot

Legian’s main surf spot is most well known as Padma and is generally the best sandbank along Legian Beach.

Legian is better known as a tourist attraction for it’s long, smooth sand beach connecting Kuta Beach to Seminyak. Just a short trip from Kuta, Padma is easy to check out on your journey North towards other world-class reef breaks in the area like Seminyak, Airport Reefs, Berawa, or Canggu. With a very consistent set of swell, you are likely to find fun waves at Padma year-round regardless of swell. Considering it’s a beach break, you may be able to stray away from the crowd by searching out a private peak rather than paddling out to an already overpopulated line-up. Padma is a great spot for beginner, intermediate, and advanced surfers looking for quick, fun, and accessible surf.

What kind of wave is Legian Beach?

Legian is a beach break located adjacent to Kuta Beach and connects 3 kilometres of white sand beach between Seminyak and Tuban. Better known as a tourist destination fit for swimming and general recreation, the beach break is fun but not exactly world-class. Lefts tend to be a bit longer walled-out sections and rights tend to barrel under ideal conditions. Legian is a great wave for folks venturing into surfing for the first time or veterans looking for easy access to the break without the hassle of a boat ride, guided trip, or long paddle out.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

Before paddling out, take 10-15 minutes to watch a few sets roll into the beach. You should be able to notice where the waves tend to break and where the peaks tend to form. Look for rip currents where the water seems murky or the waves tend to die out. It’s always easier to paddle out in a rip but be aware of your proximity to the peak, and current strength or you may spend more of your session looking for the peak that surfing the waves it provides.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

The long open stretch of soft sandy beach is well populated with tourists, chair/umbrella rentals, bintangs, fresh coconuts and the odd surfer.

Is there food nearby?

Considering your close proximity to Kuta, there’s a variety of different dining options in the area. Here’s a few you wouldn’t want to miss:

Bali Pearl Restaurant is much, much more than your typical warung in Bali. With a mix of european and asian inspired foods, Bali Pearl Restaurant offers a fine dining experience just two blocks from the break at Legian. While I’m sure you wouldn’t ruffle too many feathers appearing mid-afternoon in a pair of trunks with sandy ankles, Bali Pearl Restaurant is a bit better suited for a romantic evening out than your post-surf grinds.

Azul Beach Club is connected to the aforementioned Padma Resort Legian, Azul Beach Club is what you imagine when you think of a meal out in Bali. Ocean/sunset views, relaxed atmosphere, and bamboo decor, Azul Beach Club is a great choice for everything from a family night out, romantic meal, or few beers with the boys. You’ll find sangria, pizza, french fries, and churros on the menu keeping tummies happy from Tijuana to Timbuktu. Azul Beach Club is a great choice for groups, families, couples, or single surfers even without mentioning the jacuzzi access, occasional live music, and proximity to the surf (a brisk 2 minute walk).

Yogi’s Paradise and Grill – While the idea of a Yogi’s paradise might bring to mind images of a single grain of rice beneath the Bodhi tree, think again. Yogi’s paradise is championed by the picinic basket loving bear of jellystone national park and it’s not difficult to imagine why. Yogi’s Paradise and Grill offers a plethora of dishes from fresh shellfish to lightly braised beef atop onion rings or french-fried potatoes. Great for families, groups, couples or singles Yogi’s Paradise is sure to fill the belly

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Armada Flow House – Considering the close proximity to world-class waves throughout Bali, you might find the idea of a wave pool a bit ludicrous; think again. Armada Flow House offers a world-class standing wave for you to practice your barrel riding, aerial maneuvers, or boogie boarding. Armada Flow House is equipped with a FlowRider standing wave better known for bringing surfing to the masses in hotels, bars, and cruise ships worldwide. Regardless of conditions, Armada Flow House is a great place for your first wave, to perfect your barrel riding, or jump on a boogie board.

Listen to some live music at Bali Beach Shack – Bali Beach Shack is a novelty like no other you’ll find in Bali. Family-friendly bar, restaurant, and drag show (advertised as family-rated) Bali Beach Shack is a great place for music, food, and laughs. After a couple of days of hard surfing, and nights of hard drinking, who doesn’t love a goofy dude wearing a dress singing Cher? Stop by Bali Beach Shack for entertainment, food, and fun.

Legian Street – The main drag in Legian; Legian Street, is a great place to shop for local souvenirs, grab a bite to eat, people watch, or scope local culture. Legian Street is a great place for a stroll before hitting the bars or after hitting the lip.

What else

Legian is located adjacent to Kuta and stretches all the way to Seminyak. A hired scooter gets you easy access to a ton of tourist attractions and surf spots in the area so be sure to look into grabbing a moped, scooter, or motorbike if you have a chance.

Kuta Reef Surf Spot

Kuta is located just north of the bottleneck of the Bukit peninsula on the western side of Bali.

Once a quiet fishing village, Kuta was one of the first cities in Indo to be significantly affected by tourism. Today, Kuta is a bustling tourist destination for travellers all over the world. Kuta reef is one of a number of breaks in the surrounding area of Kuta including Airport reefs and if you’re willing to make the trip Canggu. Kuta’s airport makes it easy for this to be your first session in Bali and breaks well in any condition from 3 feet to double overhead. Due to its close proximity to such a bustling tourist destination, Kuta reef consistently tends to be one of the more crowded waves in Bali so if this is your first session don’t be discouraged.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Kuta Reef?

Kuta Reef can break in 50 to 200-metre walled-up bowls ripe for maneuvers and a few barrels. Before surfers began pushing south into the Bukit peninsula, Kuta reef was considered one of the better breaks for big dry season swells. It tends to pick up a bit more swell than airport reefs and the beach breaks in the area. A fun and accessible wave, crowds are a mix of travelling surfers, expats, locals, and unfortunately the occasional beginner being pushed into a wave. Considering crowds are typically an issue, bring your patience to the line-up and consider praying for serenity. On the bigger days, you can get caught high and dry between take-off and your bottom turn so if you’re the beginner mentioned above know your limits and stick to the beachie. One other note: it’s easy to get ambitious and move to close to the first peak where the wave isn’t makeable. Locals better versed in the local geography will drop in on your every time so chill out and wait your turn in the line-up.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

The paddle out to Kuta Reef usually takes about 20 minutes plus depending on your physical condition. The distance is about 800 metres offshore so if you’re not up for a long pre and post-session paddle, it’s worth it to hire a local boat driver to give you a ride. Heads up: don’t forget to book your boat trip back or you’ll need to make the paddle back to shore. Boat drivers will typically drop you in the channel and you can paddle over to the peak. You can find boat drivers on the beach at Discovery Kartika at Low tide or at the end of Jalan Kartika Plaza.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

As mentioned above, Kuta reef is located about 800 metres from the beach so you most likely won’t be hanging out on the sand scoping surfers. If you do plan on hanging out on the beach, or you happen to be traveling with a non-surfer Kuta Beach is where you can relax in the sand.

Where should I stay?

Is there food nearby?

Kuta is full of warungs, cafes, restaurants, and general places to be fed. Take a look at some of the spots on our list for recommendations to satisfy your next Kuta Reef post-surf hunger.

Segara Asia offers classic Balinese cuisine, live music, and a comfortable atmosphere for kicking back and enjoying some amazing food. Located beach-side, you can enjoy the pool, swim up bar, or live music while still keeping your eyes on the peak. This is a great place to start off your evening with cocktails while enjoying the sunset or stay for an authentic dining experience. Be warned; bring your appetite for adventure, there may likely be smells, tastes, or ingredients that you’re not familiar with so don’t hold back and enjoy the ride.

Boardwalk Restaurant offers a high class, comfortable, and surf focused ambience and experience. Again, your feet couldn’t be much closer to the beach than standing in the Boardwalk restaurant. They offer a wide array of cuisine but tend to focus towards Mediterranean, Western, and Latin dishes. Food, drink, and the environment gets high reviews from travellers and surfers alike.

The Wharf Restaurant is another beachfront and beautiful restaurant with a mix of Western and Asian inspired dishes. No pool but you’re literally steps from the waterline. Known for its pizzas and live music, The Wharf Restaurant is great for surfers, couples, and families.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Water Park – Waterbom Bali gets amazing reviews from travellers of all ages. Great place to take the family for a run around between surf sessions. While you can enjoy your usual waterslides and lazy rivers, Waterbom offers a unique look into Bali’s ecosystems with an emphasis on environmental responsibility and conservation. If you’re surfed out and looking for a good time, Waterbom is definitely worth a visit.

Kuta Square Shopping Mall The Kuta Square Mall is your typical shopping centre with everything from designer clothes, skin products, perfumes, and surf clothing. If you need some money exchanged there are a few ATMs as well. Great place to grab an extra pair of boardies just in case. There are a few warung style restaurants connected to the mall as well if you’re looking for a cheaper place to grab some food.

Kuta Theater While it may seem a little odd to catch a flick on a surf trip, never underestimate the debilitating power of sunburn. After hours of shirtless paddling on the open ocean, your back might need a break from the UV annihilation. Kuta theatre is a great place to watch a film and relax after you’ve surfed to your heart’s desire.

Bali Sea Turtle Society The double overhead sea turtle sculpture is a great place to grab your novelty selfie, but in actuality, the Bali Sea Turtle Society has much more to offer than the odd photo. With the ever-present threat or climate change, plastic pollution, and ocean acidification, it’s good to remind ourselves that there are still good people in the world working to preserve our playground: the ocean. The Bali Sea Turtle Society offers volunteer opportunities protecting and releasing baby sea turtles. Your kid, if you have them in tow, will never forget the experience of holding and releasing a baby turtle. Stop by for a visit and see what you can do to help protect the places where we play.

Vihara Dharmayana Kuta is one of the main religious venues in Kuta and it sits in a leafy backstreet, but you will still be able to spot it from afar thanks to its ornate roof. One of the greatest aspects of Bali, aside from its abundance of near perfect waves, is its culture. You won’t experience the hospitality or history in Bali anywhere else in the world so take the time to visit a temple or two.

What else
do I need
to Know?

If the crowd at Kuta Reef is too much to handle, there’s a second reef known as “Kuta Reef Middles”, “Middles” or “Second Reef” about 50 meters to the south towards the airport reefs. This is a shorter and sometimes smaller left but can be lots of fun, especially if you’re beating the crowd. As I said before, don’t forget to book your boat-trip back. Worst-case scenario: wave your board in the air and cross your fingers someone’s gracious enough to pick you up.

Where is Kuta Reef?

Kuta Reef is located about 800 metres out to sea from the southern end Kuta. You can paddle out but it’s worth it to take a boat. The going rate is around 50,000Rp per person.

How to get around?

Kuta is a big enough town that you can get around by taxi, scooter, or on foot. If you’re looking to explore any more of the country it’s definitely worth it to hire a scooter or a car. Traffic is typically extremely heavy in Kuta so scooters are helpful for weaving through more heavy intersections and saving a lot of time.

Kuta Beach Surf Spot

The most famous of all of Bali’s beaches, primarily because tourism in Bali began with Kuta Beach.

The long stretch of golden sand provides a beautiful coastline for beachgoers and a safe bottom for surfers of all levels. Although you will most commonly find beginners learning to surf at Kuta beach there are plenty of locals displaying a high level of surfing and sometimes experienced surfers washing off a Kuta hangover in between surf trips to other Indonesian islands.

Halfway Kuta

Legian

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Kuta Beach?

Kuta Beach is a beach break with waves that break all the way along the 2km stretch of beach. Giving surfers a lot of space to spread out and find a peak of your own, if you’re searching for a solo session and willing to compromise on quality. The most consistent and crowded peak along the beach is what’s known as Halfway Kuta, located approximately 50 metres north of Poppies Lane 2. Commonly known as the best peak at Kuta Beach, Halfway Kuta is mostly a right hand wave that breaks longer than the rest of the waves along the beach due to how the sand builds up in this section of beach and the formation of a small channel, rather than the fast walls that close out along other areas of the beach. On bigger swells and a low tide, Halfway Kuta can turn into a hollow dredging wave that provides some fun barrels for those that are skilled enough. Most commonly though the waves are soft waist to knee high runners that make Kuta Beach so good for those travelling to Bali to learn how to surf. For the rest of the peaks on along the beach, the higher tide is the optimal time to surf when the faster sections are more makeable and offer the chance to link several maneuvers on each wave before it closes out.

Most Common hazards

Pollution, especially after heavy rain which is frequent in the wet season of October to March and particularly so from December to February. Kuta Beach can also produce heavy thick-lipped surf when the surf gets overhead, so if you are a beginner surfer just be sure to take some time to check the conditions before entering the water.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

It doesn’t get any easier than Kuta Beach. Pick your peak and paddle out in between sets. If you’re super lazy, look for a rip where the water is flowing back out after a set has come in, then paddle out with the flow of water and into position on the sandbank of your choice.

What is the beach like?

Kuta Beach runs for approximately 2km of the 5km plus stretch of sandy coastline with Tuban to the south and Legian Beach to the north. The combination of sun, sand, surf, and nightlife is what makes this beach so popular. However, during the wet season, the beach can attract rubbish being washed up on the beach with the change in winds from the consistent offshore trade winds from the southeast that are most common in the dry season. Although rubbish is usually cleaned up daily some days.

The natural scenery of the beach is very beautiful and it’s no wonder it become the main icon of the island when tourism began in Bali. Lined with 5 stars hotels that are located on the street next to the beach and with the biggest mall on the island, close to restaurants with different types of foods, and little shops selling all kinds of gear ranging from surfing gear, clothes, crafts, and more is some of what makes Kuta Beach so iconic.

Where should I stay?

Location

Where is Kuta Beach?

Located on the western side of the island just north of Ngurah Rai International Airport in Kuta Beach was the first area to see large-scale tourist development in Bali. Therefore it is centrally located where development has expanded from further across the island year after year.

How to get around?

The best way to get around if you are experienced is by scooter. However, be warned the traffic in Kuta is hectic and far too many people are injured in accidents on a daily basis. Don’t wind up another statistic. For a safer option take a taxi, although travel times can take a while with more and more cars on Kuta’s small roads. It can be quicker to walk at certain times of the day if you’re not going too far.

Is there parking fees?

Parking your scooter at Kuta Beach will cost you around 2,000Rp for the day.

How to get there?

When flying into Bali you will arrive at Ngurah Rai International Airport. From here you have no problem organising a taxi for the short ride into Kuta. Taxis are pre-paid at the taxi counter when exiting customs at the international area of the airport. However, if you are traveling with surfboards you will be charged more at the taxi counter than if you were traveling without boards. To get around this you can organise transport through your accommodation prior to arriving or if you are a tough negotiator try your luck bartering down a driver once you’re past the taxi stand.

Keramas Surf Spot

Keramas is a heavy right-hander, breaking over a shallow section of reef off a long stretch of black sand and rice fields.

Once only surfed by locals and expats-in-the-know, Keramas is slowly becoming one of the more popular waves in Bali. Since the construction of a new portion of road, Keramas has been featured in edits from professional surfers globally and a Junior World Event. While no longer a “secret” spot, Keramas more than lives up to the hype. Expert surfers love the steep drops, long barrel sections, and powerful open faces for plenty of maneuvers, not to mention the regular opportunity for aerials. Be warned: know your limits, Keramas is also known for dealing out its fair share of injuries and has a local crowd of pro surfers.

Keramas

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Keramas?

In a land abundant with perfect lefts, Keramas stands apart. Keramas is a thick-lipped heavy right-hander with a fast-breaking barrel section that breaks over a shallow chunk of volcanic rock. The face can bowl out before closing out on the inside which offers an open right shoulder for big maneuvers. Expert surfers take advantage of the steep shoulder for the occasional aerial. You’ll find folks in the line-up on all tides but the incoming typically results in a longer shoulder and slightly slower barrel. Onshore winds tend to pick up mid-morning most days blowing from the east. The resulting slight crumble can be a great launchpad for airs. Considering the world-class nature of the wave, you can also expect large crowds of locals, pros, and travelling surfers. Dropping in on a fellow surfer at Keramas could be a death sentence so be respectful. Most surfers prefer Keramas from waist high to double overhead but the odd visionary has been known to paddle out when it’s bigger. On big days the barrel breaks faster and the reef doesn’t get any deeper so be aware of your limitations.

Other names for spot:

Keramas: Shampoo, The Golden Monkey

What do the names of the spot mean?

Pronounced “Kera-Mas”. In English Keramas means; “Shampoo” or “Wash hair” which is local slang for getting barreled. Keramas is also known as “The Golden Monkey” which comes from the original pronunciation of the name ‘Kura Emas’ which slowly evolved into ‘Kuramas’ and finally Keramas, the current name of the spot.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

From the beach keep an eye out for the obvious channel wide of the reef. Be cautious of shallow double ups over the reef on the inside.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

Keramas breaks outside of a black sand beach that stretches for well over 10 kilometres. The beach is known for beautiful views, sparkling volcanic sand and farmers moving their flock of ducks just like a flock of sheep. Great for long beach walks, Keramas doesn’t seem to attract a ton of beachgoers aside from avid surfers so enjoy a bit of seclusion when you have a chance. The black sand tends to get very hot so consider bringing sandals and maybe even an umbrella.

Where should I stay?

Being somewhat of a very quiet area in Bali there are still some great accommodation options for surfers in the immediate and surrounding area of the surf break at Keramas.

Is there food nearby?

While you can find food at the local warungs in the surrounding area at Keramas, here are a few restaurants to check out in the area.

Keramas Aero Park is not your typical restaurant. Aero Park offers a bar, Balinese and western food, great views of the surrounding rice fields, and a children’s playground all set within and adjacent to a Boeing 747 aeroplane. If you’re asking yourself, did I read that right? You did; the restaurant is built inside a 747 aeroplane parked above the bar and surrounding rice fields. To access the aeroplane or restaurant, you’ll have to climb a few flights of stairs reminiscent of the Kuta airport. A bit of a novelty, Aero Park gets good reviews from traveling surfers and will definitely be a quirky memory from your next surf trip.

Spot Stonehenge over tea at Standing Stones Restaurant (The Royal Purnama) – As our list continues, Spot Stonehenge over tea at Standing Stones Restaurant, part of the Royal Purnama Art suites and Villas, offers another semi-odd gimmick: the chance to dine adjacent to standing stones. Don’t be fooled, these stones weren’t placed by wandering druids from the UK, the stones at Standing Stones Restaurant are an added aspect of the decor that gives SSR an interesting ambience. Food is incredibly delicious and expensive. Great for a romantic evening out.

Warong Legong offers a more traditional Balinese dining experience with local and western cuisine in a quiet indoor-outdoor restaurant environment. A great choice for families and couples, Warong Legong is great for surfers looking for a simple local lunch or dinner option void of architectural oddities you’ve seen so far on this list.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Hotel Komune Beach Club is a great spot for a rest in between surfing sessions at Keramas. Located directly on the beach in front of the surf break, you’ll enjoy live music, cocktails, free wifi, and the occasional eye candy. In addition to the pool, bar, and lounge areas, Keramas Beach Club offers an open-air cinema surrounded by coconut trees and an outstanding ocean view. Aside from North Shore or Point Break, obvious classics in the surf film genre, the beach club often shows live sporting events and professional surfing competitions. A great place for everyone keen to socialise.

Bali Safari and Marine Park is a unique opportunity to engage with local wildlife and animals from around the world. In association with PKSBI (Indonesian Zoological Parks Association) and CBSG (Conservations Breeding Specialist Group), the Bali Safari and Marine Park work with local organisations and volunteers to help ensure the longevity and survival of local species from Sumatran Elephants and Tigers to Komodo Dragons. Bali Safari and Marine Park is a great place for families looking to keep their kids stoked between surf sessions and travellers looking to keep Instagram followers drooling.

Bali Countryside Cycling Tour – While Bali is obviously known for its incredible surfing, the mountain biking is not half bad and makes for a number one option with the exception of surfing. Downhill through the real countryside, local villages, temples, and rice paddies make for an amazing backdrop for your mountain bike ride. Bali Countryside Cycling Tour receives great reviews from all travelers looking for an intimate experience with the authentic Balinese landscape.

What else
do I need
to Know?

There are a few beach breaks along the long stretch of black sand beach where Keramas is. While they won’t often provide you with the same barrel riding experience, they’re a great option for getting away from the crowds.

Location

Where is Keramas?

Keramas is located a little ways North of the Bukit Peninsula on the Eastern side of Bali. The closest airport is located in Denpasar.

How to get around?

As for most of Bali, Scooters come highly recommended. This allows you to weave through traffic and get from point A to point B a bit quicker than walking, biking or sitting in traffic in a 4 wheeled vehicle.

Is there parking fees?

One of the few places in Bali where you’ll find free parking on the beach!

How to get to Keramas?
Step 1
If you’re headed from the airport or west coast of Bali, you’ll want to head north past Sanur along the east coast and turn onto the new road the Ketewel ByPass.
Step 2
Continue northeast along the coast through Ketewel, Pabean and Saba until you reach the Keramas area.
Step 3
Once you arrive in Keramas, you’ll need to take a small dirt track marked by a blue sign on the right-hand side of the road with the word “Keramas” painted in yellow letters by hand. It is easy to miss this sign so stay alert as you enter the area. You’ll find the beach at the far end of the road where free parking is available. Drive to the end of the road and you are there.

Impossibles Surf Spot

On the right day, you might catch a glimpse of one of the most picturesque waves not only on the Bukit but in the world.

A passerby can’t help but notice the 400-metre peeling left-handers that roll in across Impossibles reef. Alas, this is typically pure ocean trickery as Impossibles Bali, like its name is often impossible to keep up with. You can expect quick sections that leave surfers feeling defeated. However, under ideal conditions (mid-low tide and over 5 ft), Impossibles can open up and you can expect a near-perfect ride. The lineup is typically fun and friendly, however, every swell brings a different crowd!

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Impossibles?

Impossibles is well known for long tubes that are more than likely to lock you out. While there doesn’t seem to be an exact science to predicting waves at impossibles, the break is known to line up on larger swells (5 ft +) and especially low tides. There are typically two take off zones to choose from at Impossibles; the top and bottom sections. The upper section may work on a smaller swell but the bottom section is known for its predictably hollow sections.

On the right day, under perfect conditions, you may spot a set breaking from the top end of the reef near Padang Padang that will hold up through walled, barreling, and long shoulder sections for upwards of 400 meters. These will dump you right at the top of Bingin closing out in front of the lagoon. Last tip: be sure to know your limits. Although Impossibles is always a couple of feet smaller than Uluwatu it can definitely be a swell magnet in the dry season and surfers should be prepared with an entry and exit strategy from the water (with or without your board).

Most Common hazards

Although Impossibles is typically a deeper reef than other areas of the Bukit there are sections of shallow reef to be cautious of down the line. While fast-breaking waves can get you caught on the inside on dry reef with powerful serges of water. Be extra cautious when entering and exiting the surf over the reef, take your time to watch surfers first to get an idea of what you need to be cautious of. It is very common for surfers to get injured when coming in over the reef here, therefore, be sure you have the skill required to handle this spot before you head out.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

At Impossibles you have 3 options:

Option 1: You can either paddle over from the beach at Padang Padang, Impossibles is just on the Northern end of the beach.

Option 2: You can also access Impossibles from Bingin, but be forewarned you’ll have to descend all of the steps to Bingin followed by a traverse through the lagoon and long paddle up the reef.

Option 3: A third option is to descend to the middle of the reef using the Anantara Resort Elevator. Bear in mind, you’ll have to paddle across a shallow section of reef under the influence of strong currents. When choosing your takeoff zone, keep an eye out to see if there are slower sections of the wave and this is probably your best bet.

What is the beach like?

Impossibles beach is nestled north of Padang Padang beach and the southern end of Bingin beach, two of the most picturesque beaches on the Bukit peninsula. Both are accessed by stairs and descend down from the cliffs and parking areas. You can access Impossibles beach known as Pantai Pemutih from either beach which is really all the same stretch of beach but is restricted by the tide and areas of rock. The beach here is characterised by a narrow section of coarsely textured white sand, mossy cliff sides, and a number of exposed chunks of rock big and small.

Where should I stay?

There’s plenty to choose from as far as surf style accommodations go in the vicinity along the reef at Impossibles. Below we have provided the best options to access the surf in all price brackets to accommodate every type of surfer planning their surf trip to Impossibles Bali.

Is there food nearby?

You can find your typical Warrung style food in Padang Padang or on the beach in Bingin. There’s plenty of resorts and restaurants in the vicinity as well.

Dugong at Suarga Padang Padang is a great place to grab a drink or bite to eat cliff-side but is a bit pricey. Which is understandable considering the quality of the food and dining under the authentic bamboo roof, accompanied by panoramic 220-metre cliff frontage.

Trattoria Uluwatu has great authentic Italian food. Being a long-standing restaurant in the area it is certainly here to stay and a great go-to for reliable refuelling for that next surf.

Keep your eyes peeled as you walk, bike, or scooter around the area, you’ll be sure to find something interesting just about everywhere you look.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

Anantara Spa – Organise a day of authentic but luxurious pampering for your girlfriend while you clock up some time in the green room. Anantara also has a number of restaurants open to the public if they are not fully booked which provide incredible views over the entire reef at Impossibles and spectacular sunsets.

Dugong Lounge & Bar offers a relaxed, and luxurious setting for a quiet drink and nibble.

Fine-tune your camera skills while you take in the amazing sunsets cliff side. The Impossibles area of the Bukit is a spectacle to be seen, so spend some time taking photos in and out of the surf that you will certainly remember for a lifetime.

What else
do I need
to Know?

As always in Bali, never fight in the line-up. There’s a strong disliking towards travelers, surfers, or expats who don’t follow this rule. Strong disliking is probably an understatement, you’ll be asked to leave and it won’t be pretty. So just be cool in the line-up and respect surfing etiquette.

Location

Where is Impossibles?

Impossibles is located between Bingin and Padang Padang in Pecatu area on the Bukit peninsula.

How to get around?

You can get around everywhere in the area most efficiently by scooter. Scooters are great as they allow you to weave between traffic, when necessary, and don’t take as much space parking.

Is there parking fees?

Depending on where you paddle out from parking fees vary as described below.

Padang Padang parking is 2,000Rp per scooter and 5,000Rp per car. From the parking lot, you will have to cross the road and then pay 10,000Rp to enter the beach. Bingin Parking is 5,000Rp per scooter.

How to get there?
Step 1
If you’re headed south from Kuta, head towards the Bypass road and follow the signs for Nusa Dua.

Hyatt Reef Surf Spot

Far from shore, while sipping your Bintang, you may notice what appears to be a perfect right-hander, this is Hyatt reef.

Upon closer inspection, Hyatt reef can be a little shifty, a little sectiony and a little unpredictable. Technically an extension of Sanur, Hyatt reef is one of the 4 different peaks along the 4 kilometres of the reef in Sanur. However, Hyatt reef stands alone in its well-groomed open inside bowls and heavy outside barrels. One of the many breaks in Bali that takes its namesake from a local hotel, Hyatt reef is a long (often hollow) right-hander that breaks quickly over a shallow reef. Typical near-perfect Bali surf, Hyatt reef does not disappoint. On smaller days, expect a long soft shoulder great for everyone from beginners to Kelly Slater.

Hyatt Reef is one of the many long right-handers in the Sanur area.  The break itself is broken into three sections: Outer peak, Main Peak, and Inside Peak.  The Outer Peak is another 100-metre paddle from where you’ll find most surfers and is known for short, steep, and hollow waves.  On bigger days, a pintail will help you make the steep bottom turn necessary to keep pace and connect to sections further inside.  The Main Peak is located directly in front of the Hyatt Hotel in Sanur. The current is nothing to scoff at but you can expect everything from steep drop-ins, soft shoulders, or open bowls (with barrels) depending on conditions. If you’re around on a day when Nusa Dua is about 8ft+ expect Hyatt Reef to be firing.  The inside at Hyatt Reef is typically crowded with surfers of mixed abilities, due to the soft right shoulder in deeper water at the end of the reef.  Dive boats and spectators are to be expected at the end of this section so keep your eyes on a swivel.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

Out in front of the Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali Resort where the main channel is, Hyatt Reef is well over 1 kilometre from the beach. Considering it’s the longest paddle out to a surf break in Bali, it’s best to pay for a boat ride out to the line-up. If you’re game for a searing bicep burn, you can make the paddle out through the sections of reef further north, down the reef in front of the renamed Hyatt Regency Bali Hotel which is due to open later this year and where Hyatt Reef is a fraction closer to shore.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Proper planning prevents unnecessary time out of the water, and the best place to start is a first aid kit.

What is the beach like?

Previously a black sand beach, today Sanur’s beaches are protected by a breakwater built by many of the nearby hotels and resorts. The beach is lined with ground up white sand made from the nearby coral reefs. The beaches in Sanur tend to be quieter than their Kuta counterparts and attract fewer heavy drinking teenagers than other places in Bali.

Where should I stay?

There are plenty of places to choose from in Bali’s oldest resort town. Check below for some of the best accommodation options in the immediate area of Hyatt Reef.

Cheapest Price Range – Agung & Sue Watering Hole II

Classic Bali surf style motel, Agung & Sue Watering Hole II, not to be confused with its counterpart of the same name, is built in a combination of locally sourced and heavily lacquered wood and stone/concrete cobbles. Cheap and basic rooms will give you a comfortable place to rest your head after hours of paddling followed by food and Bintangs. Considering the area surrounding Hyatt reef is heavily populated by high-class hotels and resorts, a cheap stay can be tough to come by. A quick 5-minute walk from the beach, you’ll have quick and easy access to the beach and various breaks in the area. If you’re looking to spend your time poolside with a cocktail, this might not be your spot, but if you plan to surf your legs off and spend your time exploring Sanur, this could be your ideal accommodation. Keep in mind, don’t expect a 5-star hotel for a one-star price. Agung & Sue Watering Hole II is a great choice for single travellers, surfers, and adventurers.

Is there food nearby?

Being the up-and-coming metropolis that Sanur is, there’s definitely plenty of restaurants, warungs, and cafes to choose from. Take a look below for some of our favourites.

Massimo – Italian Restaurant – Intimate decor and atmosphere, Massimo offer Bali-inspired authentic Italian. Be sure not to miss the gelato, celebrated by everyone from 9 to 90. Overlooking the Balinese landscape and boasting the best pizza in town, Massimo is a great choice for anyone who loves great food.

Dusk Blue Restaurant – Bali has developed a culture of cheap, healthy, and flavorful food. Whether inspired by the countless cyber nomads or a combination of surfing yogis, Bali’s food culture is here to stay. Dusk Blue Restaurant is a steward of this legacy through providing globally inspired cuisine made with fresh and healthy ingredients. Walking distance from the beach, Dusk Blue offers a comfortable atmosphere with great post surf grinds that won’t hang around your midsection during your next session.

Charming – Considering you’re literally two blocks from the beach, seafood is always a good option. Charming offers a great selection of fresh seafood dishes inspired by French, Indian, and Balinese traditions. While it might not look like much from the outside, you’ll find amazing food, comfortable atmosphere, and the occasional band of travelling singers. Charming is a great choice for surfers with a sophisticated pallet, couples looking for a casual and romantic night out, or families with a taste for adventure.

Lilla Pantai is located smack dab on the sand adjacent to your boat ride out to Hyatt reef. While at most warungs you’ll find your typical smoothies and chips, Lilla Pantai raises the bar with a wide array of foods to choose from. The full English breakfast gets high marks from brits on the go and similarly, avocado toast gets raving reviews from vagrant millennials. Lilla Pantai is a great place to check out pre or post surf session where you can enjoy a cocktail beachside.

The Fire Station is a great place for the hungry. You’ll fill up on ribs, chicken and onion rings, or ceviche, cocktails, and cheesecake. Large portions, great food, and an energetic atmosphere, The Fire Station is a great place to start your night out before hitting the town and after surfing your face off. Not the first place to please brits on this list, The Fire Station offers a Sunday roast complete with Yorkshire puddings and fish and chips with what looks dangerously like mushy peas. Great for families, groups, singles, and couples The Fire Station is sure to surprise and delight.

Stiff Chilli is just steps from the beach with a casual atmosphere and delicious Italian inspired dishes. Great for families, couples, and single surfers with an appetite. Without breaking the bank, Stiff Chilli offers a comfortable and accommodating ambience complete with live music. Easily accessible from your next surf session, Stiff Chilli is a great choice if you’re looking to fill up and relax.
