Periscopes Surf Spot

Periscopes is the world-class right-hand wave option in the wider Lakey Peak area.

However, in comparison to other waves in the area, Periscopes is more protected from open ocean swells and requires a scooter drive to access it. The name “Periscopes” is derived from the way the wave peels across the reef, resembling periscopes rising from the depths of the ocean. Whether you’re seeking adrenaline-pumping waves or simply wish to score a fun session, Periscopes is sure to leave a mark on your Sumbawa surfing journey.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Periscopes?

Periscopes is a powerful right-hand reef break that can provide barrels when the conditions are perfect. Expect a rolling takeoff that requires plenty of paddle strength. The first section requires speed to keep up with the wave which runs into sections that enable huge turns and airs further down the line. Generally, there is a bit more water on the reef at Periscopes than other waves in the area, however, the lip will still push you into the reef if you fall in the wrong spot. Periscopes apart is its ability to cater to surfers of varying skill levels. While experienced surfers revel in the challenge of conquering its more demanding sections further up the reef and bigger swells, intermediate surfers can still find opportunities to catch memorable waves and progress their abilities.

How do you get in and out of the surf at Periscopes?

Periscopes breaks close to the beach and provides the easiest paddle out of all the waves in the area. From the beach simply paddle out through the obvious channel to the left of the wave. Be sure to paddle wide enough that you remain out of the way if any set waves come through.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Reef cuts and infections are a big deal…They require immediate attention to avoid countless health problems.

What is the beach like?

You’ll find grainy golden sand which your feet sink into inside the bay and along the high tide line along the point. Along the point is a flat rocky type of reef from the mid-tide line and below.

Where should I stay?

You’ll find no accommodation options directly in front of Periscopes. You’ll want to stay in Lakey Peak.

Nowadays it can pay to book accommodation in advance.

You’ll find plenty of options online through the likes of Airbnb or Booking.com. The cheapest accommodations have no online presence and are booked on arrival. However, now that the internet is available in the area there are a lot of surfers living and working remotely from Lakey Peak. Consequently, some of these cheaper accommodations are reserved long-term, with guests coming and going at their convenience.

As always when traveling to almost all remote areas of Indonesia do not expect to stay in luxurious accommodations. Lakey Peak is no exception, what you expect to be well presented is most often always rundown.

Stay in Lakey Peak for easy access to The Peak and Lakey Pipe, with other surf spots a short distance by scooter north or south. You can walk the entire strip of accommodations on Lakey Beach in about 30 minutes.

Some of the most commonly booked accommodations online are:

Is there food nearby?

You won’t find any food or drink options at the beach at Periscopes so you’ll want to eat Lakey Beach.

Most accommodations offer simple food, there are better options in the form of cafes, warungs, and bars that line the length of the beach. Try ‘The Wreck,’ ‘Fat Mah’s,’ ‘Ali’s Bar,’ or ‘Lakey Beach Inn,’ which is famous for its daily fresh sashimi.

What else is there to do in the area other than surfing?

There’s not a whole lot else to do but surf and with the wave quality available at Lakey’s there’s not much else you’d want to be doing.

However, the fishing is great. There are plenty of options to hire a boat and captain to take you out. While you’re at it you can explore potential waves on the opposite side of the bay.

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Sumbawa outside of surfing is Mount Tambora National Park, which is home to the iconic Mount Tambora volcano. Visitors can hike to the summit of the volcano, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

WAVE INFO

What kind of wave is Lakey Peak?

Lakey Peak is known for producing a powerful top-to-bottom peak that breaks left and right. The right is perfect for backdooring the barrel on the drop with a rippable end section ripe for aerials. The left is longer with a consistent barrel that you can pull up into after making the drop. Rarely flat Lakey’s is super fun when it’s small on all tides and becomes extremely heavy and gnarly with some size. All in all, a super consistent wave that is highly regarded among surfers.

What kind of wave is Lakey Pipe?

Lakey Pipe is a barrelling left-hander that runs off into the channel across from Lakey Peak. It’s a technical take-off into a tricky barrel that spits out onto a soft shoulder suitable for turns. You’ll want to avoid this wave on lower tides. and will have a better chance of getting under the lip and into the barrel on medium to high tides.

How do you get in and out of the surf?

LAKEY PEAK: Getting in and out at Lakey Peak is easy but a long paddle as the reef is a few hundred meters offshore. You can paddle out from the beach through the lagoon and channel on either side of the reef.

From the beach, the channel to the left of Lakey Peak (which the right-hander breaks into) is an easier paddle than the channel on the other side of the reef. However, it is a longer paddle. Be aware of the shallow reef on the end section of the right when paddling out. Paddle wide of this section of reef, if you get caught out by a large oncoming set the current in this area can hold you inside. Then the reef can suddenly appear as the water draws out.

If you prefer, you can hire a boat to take you to the peak, but not surfers many do. Paddling back in through the channel and lagoon is generally fairly easy. Unless there is a massive swell and water is moving in or out of the lagoon. It does have to be exceptionally big for this to occur.

LAKEY PIPE: Paddle out through the channel in the lagoon from the beach. It’s a decent paddle out but not quite as long as the paddle to Lakey Peak.

Regardless of your experience, reef-related injuries are not a matter of if, but when. Reef cuts and infections are a big deal…They require immediate attention to avoid countless health problems.

What is the beach like?

You’ll find patches of pebbly golden sand on the high tide line of the beach at Lakey’s while the rest of the beach is predominantly cobblestone.
